Blown Glass

Anyone have any experience or knowlege about blown glass.

Ive been thinking pretty hard about getting into the hobby, but i need some realistic expectations of financial investment, and skill required.
 
I don't really have any info for ya, but I've watched one of these guys work a few times.... it's badass:rock:

I'd say your best bet would be to find somebody local that does it, and see what the deal is. Maybe they'll let you give it a try:dontknow:
 
I've seen it done and looks like one would definitely need some training. Very badass if you could learn how to do it.
 
Don't touch the gooey glowing red stuff. Its hot.

I have seen shows and it looks like a real art from. If you do get into it, make sure to keep us posted with some pics.
 
Saw them doing it in Williamsburg, Va (Jamestown). It is cool how they take the glob of molten glass and form it and make the handle for it and then into the annealing oven to cool. Lots of technical stuff going on there you never really know about.
 
My sister in law is a glass blower, she rents time at a studio as it was way way cheaper then getting the equipment. It might be something that is available in your area.

Thats actually a really good idea. And maybe meet some other people in your area doing the same thing that are willing to teach/ share stuff.

Now that is an idea.
Since i brought this idea up, ive done some research. i can get tools, the torch and tanks filled for about 600. Then another 1200 for a 2 cubic foot kiln.

My wife and i befriended a glass blower before we got married and had him make this wedding cake topper. Wish i had pictures but we got to customize the way we wanted it and watch it being made. It was two swans one on a higher level, leaning down kissing the other swan looking up, and there was 2 spiraling suspended rose vines circling them. We lit it with an L.E.D. that cycled colors.

Under the bottom tier of the cake we have this 18 inch blown glass water fountain to match it. We recieved more comments on the glass than any other decoration at the wedding.

Weve been unable to get back intouch with the artist to get more information on it, but i will be researching some studios around here to see if i can get into this.

She also teaches at UCSD and they have a heck of a studio. There is all kinds of stuff available on dovebid as well if you need a kin.

I would also suggest finding a someone with a CNC machine to do block cutting. Its pretty cheap as wood does not do much damage to the tooling and they can do it on the weekends. And start collecting newspaper for some reason when wet it does not burn with glass and they go through metric tons of the stuff.

Its been a long search but going from contact from contact i learned of a lady, whos father owns a Glass Art Gallery, and is looking for an apprentice to help with odds and ends. I just sent an email and will be stopping by this week to see what its all about.

If i get into this, my trademark will be a 6 inch "Fangs" Emblem
