Blown Subwoofer or Amp?

I left my house this afternoon put in the Linkinpark CD and proceeded to get on the highway. The stero wasn't maxed out and it had only been on for about 5 minutes, when the Subwoofer stopped working. For the last couple of days while playing the stereo at low levels I was hearing some crackling from the subwoofer. I personally think its the subwoofer that went belly up, but I have read some threads saying that the amps were usually what died. I just can't see the amp going into thermal overload in only 5 minutes and the stereo wasn't even maxed out.

Some input from anyone that has gone thru this, or no of someone that has would be greatly apreciated.

Also, has anyone just swaped out the subwoofer without changing the amp? I know these subs although manufactured by Infiniti are pretty crappy.

I have been thinking of a new system in my truck....but I don't really turn on the existing one too much....I like to hear the motor.....but I am looking into it.....lot's of good info from members here that have done it.

Dude I just kicked my OEM amp and subwoofer to the curb. The amp location hinders its breathing and
ventilation. Mine felt piping hot when it stopped working. Because of that I finally made up my mind.
With the power and performance these trucks boast I feel a system with way more muscle is called for.
Some folks may be content with hearing the exhaust. I gotta have my music loud clean and crisp.
Alpine and HiFonics was my choice with the JL audio 12 inch W6 subs..

Yes, all speakers were switched out. I have Boston Acoustics in the doors and tweeters in the dash along with two way BA's in the rear all for mids and highs. One of the amps, an 1880 watt 4 channel HiFonics Titan, is on the mids and highs. The other amp, a bridged 1,000 watt HiFonics Brutus, runs the two 12 inch JL Audio subs. A lightning capacitor provides continuous cache power for low bass notes to keep my headlights steady and from dimming under the stress.

The former location for the factory amp now houses either a PS2, an XBOX, or an XBOX 360 (it's wired for all three so all I have to do is switch in whatever console I want to use). The game controllers are wireless (RF). The ////ALPINE navigation is located under the passenger side dash. A device from SwiX allows me to control the whole system (even the 12 disc changer) from the steering wheel controls. The ////ALPINE head unit with touch screen controls has the DVD feature built in. The ////ALPINE EQ ERA-G320 is the main sound controller for the system. The remote/controller portion is located in the dash pocket with blue leds mounted behind it and in the dash. This EQ is attached to the brain unit located elsewhere next to the brain for the head unit. Then there's a bass gain control knob located on the left hand side of the dash on that little black plastic space close to the steering column. I'm seriously thinking of adding the iPod so I won't get skipping tracks when I hit a bump.

The entire set up ran just under 4 grand with all of the equipment and installation. During the shuttle launches in the movie ARMEGGEDDON, the massive sound will make you will feel as if you are actually at Cape Canaveral for real.

my sub quit workin too!!! Been too lazy to make an appointment at the dealer and plan on changing the whole system out once perfmance mods are complete!

For now you probably have the melody of the throaty roar your truck puts out. That is always music to my ears.
