Boeing 787 Dreaminer First Flight Take Off!

That thing is sweet...I see a new Air Force 1 in the near future not to mention a plane for all these big companies to waste more money on!

Pretty cool it gets an escort with 2 fighter planes!

Those were old trainers, not fighters :p

Looks like those wings really flex. I know they're suppose to have some flex but I didn't know it was that much.
John! Check on that and get back to me. I think they were slightly out of spec. :D

At 100% of the design load, they flex 18 feet at the tip.

There are two non-flying test aircraft. One is a static test and the other is a fatigue test airframe. The fatigue test airframe will be subjected to 3 or 5 life cycles. I forget which it is. One cycle consists of a take off, reaching cruise altitude and a landing. The wings, flight control surfaces and landing gear are subject to simulated loads. The fuseage is subjected to simulated pressure loads. One life cycle is equal to the number of takeoffs and landings that the airplane was designed for. This testing will take place over a few years.

The static test airframe is subjected to the same types of loads, but they are to higher loads and are to prove that the airframe performs as designed. At the end of this testing, the wings are loaded to failure. I'm going from memory, but if I remember right, the wings on the 747 deflected around 35 feet when they finally failed. On the 767 they center wing box failed first, and it was repaired for a second try. The fuselage failed that time so they gave up.

The link below shows the static testing of a partial 787 wing, and it's taken to failure. Kind of interesting to watch. Hope you enjoy it.

I don't think it's big enough to be a presidential airplane. If anything they would probably want a bigger plane then they now have.
