We did this two months ago up at the abandoned (for the summer) school parking lot in my town. Just killing some time and rubber on a boring summer afternoon:

I've found that the best place to do a burnout is on sealed pavement. It saves your tires a little, even though you don't get as much smoke. Also it makes it less likely to kick stones up (because the aggregate is sealed over) and damage your paint.
My stock rear tires are almost bald now from all the fun I have had this summer. I'm ordering new ones next week. There's a little tread left and I'll be damned if I don't send the stock set off with one hell of a burnout!
