Busted Driver's Side Mirror Glass

Today was the day from hell for me. Stuck outside for 3 hours rewiring a car, broke a light in my house playing with my kid, and a neighborhood kid busted the glass on the driver's side mirror of the truck.

Question is about the truck. Found the mirror glass for $69, not that bad. Does not look hard to replace, three clips, undo harness, and replace. I moved my truck out of the driveway to take a look at my wifes car and within 10 minutes a kid puts his football through my mirror. He owned up to it and came over and told me before I noticed it.

His old man is willing to pay for it but just recently I saw his F-250 V10 get re-poed. He just got a divorce and obviously is not doing that great. His kid had the balls to come over and tell me what he did, he's about 11 years old. Honesty goes a long way with me.

I am thinking of just having the kid either help me change out the mirror or go on the Internet and find the best price he can and how to replace it so he understands shit like this just doesn't magically fix itself. I don't feel right having the guy pay for it when the kid was honest about what he did. Was is stupid? Yeah, but he's 11. What can you expect?

The kids got some good moral's and apparently was raised right. Maybe split the cost with him. You'll be showing gratitude for his honesty but teaching him a lesson that money doesn't grow on trees. Have him work it off with yard work or something.

I have a drivers side complete mirror with a few scrapes and scratches, glad to send it to you if you need it.

I'd replace the mirror and let him work around the house to pay it off. But first things first, let him know that for his honesty, he's getting a break. So he knows there are rewards for being an honest person.

This way he knows he did a good thing and feels good about the entire thing.

I agree with the other guys. Explain to him how much that mirror costs and just have him do some work for you. That way he's not getting off scott-free and learns a lesson. I did like the idea of having him help fix the mirror. Might turn him into a little mechanic/car lover. BTW I'm impressed as hell that he owned up so quick. Kid's got some character.:congrats:

I agree. The kid took responsibility, impressive in today's society, just have him work it off in the yard. Might want to run it by his father first though.

I agree..sounds like a good kid..I'm sure since he confessed, he felt like sh*t when that happened, which probably taught him a lesson in itself...it sounds like only a mistake and hey sh*t happens! I don't think he likes yard work and it might be almost like punishment to him for making a mistake and confessing to it....by doing something cool like having him help you or not even making him pay may encourage him to be honest throughout life!!! You could possibly teach him something he'll remember for life! Hell I know I've had my share of experiences like that which taught me many lessons!!

I think I am going to have the old man give me half, make the kid help me, and then give him the money back as reward for being a good kid. I like the ride idea too. I agree, kids today can be turds. The fact that he came over immediately before I found it really goes a long way with me. I also agree that making him do yard work is more of a punishment. It was an accident not something he did intentionally. He made a mistake, admitted it, and took responsibility. That's a quality to be re-enforced. I just wanted him to see what it took to replace something when its broke and realize the ramifications, so that maybe he is more careful next time around people's cars.
