The caltracs are on now; how do you set the preload?

The truck looks like its jacked up in the back. I think the tightened the leaf spring while the truck was still in the air. Could I loosen the bolts without the truck being jacked up?

Mine looks higher ,too. :dontknow:

I am pretty sure it is due to the removal of the factory spring which is about 1/2" thick. You would never think it would be noticeable, but it is.

Maybe Gary could make a new set of lowering blocks especially for use with CalTracs ??

nice alex....sorry we never met up to get them on. been working like mad to finish this project! who helped ya out? I don't know about loosening them up w/out jacking it up. Think mine was up the in the air when i tightened. I'd like mine about an inch lower in the back....i think we can get blocks from speed and truck world...just about any size you want. when we goin to moroso?

For pre-load,there are several opinions. Some say turn it 15 flats past contact, and others say turn it 1/4 turn.

You could try to loosen the shackle bolts and bounce the truck a few times before re-tightening them. This is the shackle on the rear end of the spring. The leaf spring u-bolts should have no bearing on height.

I still think we should get Gary to make a set of 2 1/2" blocks for CalTrac equipped trucks.I am trying to get him to do a set for me.YES, we could just add another spacer block, but I would prefer just one.

Got any tips on the install for me? I am planning on doing mine this weekend.

This is the first I have heard about caltracs raising the rear end????? I'm not liken that.

Gary says they can't but I have to disagree. When you remove the factory snubber spring on the bottom, you are raising the rear by the thickness of that spring ( apprx 1/2")

Also over-tightening might raise it (too much preload)

gary's right......... removing the slapper bar won't raise the height of your truck, it's in the installation of your caltracs & yes - preload will raise your truck........

the slapper bar is on the bottom of the leaf spring stack...... same result if you put your lowering blocks on the bottom of the leaf springs vs the top of the leaf springs...... to change the truck height, you'd make changes @ the top of the leaf springs.......:D

In the X-Metal section,Gary gives instructions on setting the CalTracs. The thread is started by me "Lowering Blocks for use with CalTracs"

That post explained a lot for me.
