I was talking with my cousin in Okla. last week & told him that I had just purchased Caltracs & would be putting them on soon. He said the knew a guy that has had Caltracs forever, but has said there were a lot of things that needs to be done as you are putting them on. I ask him what those things were. I got the following email today: Recommend welding strap gussets from the front & back of the spring perches to the top of the axle housing, as all the extra torque can damage the axle tubes. He has seen damaged axle tubes from the spring perch crushing into the tube. He uses a piece of 3/16 bar, 1" wide & wraps it from the front of the spring perch over the axle tube to the back of the perch. Welding it at both ends & stitch welding it to the tube. This makes the spring perch much stronger. To make the Caltracs work right you need to make sure you have enough front end travel to allow for roll rotation of the vehicle. The magic number is "5". You can check that by measuring your front wheel lip height at rest, then jack the front of the vehicle up until the wheel starts to leave the ground & re-measure. If you don't have enough travel, lower your torsion bars evenly. To assist the Caltracs tie the torque boxes into the subframe connectors so the forward spring mount doesn't get ripped out of the vehicle.
Have any of you guys ever heard of this before?? I starting to rethink installing these.

We dont have a subframe. We are full frame. We dont have torsion bars, we have coil springs in the front. Install them, and be happy. All the issues he mentioned do not apply to our trucks in any way, shape or form. I have never heard of a perch ripping apart a dana 60 axle tube either.

Man, am I glad to hear that. I could just see headaches upon headaches, Everything that I have heard before it was a simple install.
