Cam Swap

Locate tdc then use the side of the lifter to get your cam readings.

mmm been months since i swapped out valve covers but im not sure that would work because lifters for these are so way down in heads and with the plastic holder they are in ,,

U can get longer rods for dial indicator from summit, you screw them together and make it as long as you need to.

Yup, Moroso or Comp Cams sell the kits to do it with heads on or off. You have to think that most cam installations in any vehicle are done heads on.;)
Most usually do things in intervals. Cam install with pushrods/springs, heads and lifters, intake/new carb etc. Not many have an all out build at one time.:burnout:

in my old days i had a lifter that i cut a push rod down and welded it to the lifter then put dial indicator on end of rod /lifter thingie ,,worked great too;)

Oh yeah, days of the old.:D There are sooo many engine building tools nowadays that even a 5 year old can do it with proper teaching;)
Only reason I do it for the most part is to assure me that the cam grind is exact and not off a degree or 2. Simple checking can ensure you are not running the cam advanced or retarded. Many times cams timing dots are not 100% accurate. More of a peace of mind deal. Especially if Piston to Valve clearance is tight due to milled heads or long duration cam.;)

correct tools boss, jsut gotta get a longer shaft;)

and what will you do when you find cam is off ,,in all my time of swapping cams in the old dodge 360,s and 318,s i ran across only one that was off and it was a custom ground cam ,,,,since viper motors dont come with an adjustable timing gear set ,,do you pull it and try to send it back ????

luckaly this one was dead on, but they do make an adjustable set, but too remember i have a full machine shop now, we can make about anything adjustable if need be;)

Exactly! They CAN and do get ground often as much as a few degrees! So you have JOE BLOW with the same mods and same cam as JOHN DOE, but JOHN DOE's put down better #'s on the dyno and track.............WHY?
Well, after so many cams are manufactured there is a possibility of a SLIGHT advance or retard ground into the cam profile. Adjustable chainsets can allow you to RETARD/ADVANCE the cam a few degrees either way. Usually a one degree or two in many LSX grinds I have seen that are reproduced on a large scale. (AKA VIPER COUPE CAM as it was a popular grind for a long time);)
Now as far as a custom grind that you or your builder spec, I have had far less errors.:dontknow: But NO you likely cannot send your cam back as they would tell you the same thing, get an adjustable timing set, unless it was off substantially.

That was gonna be my question, who sells a adjustable timming set?

more times than none tho momba with the way cams are machined today with todays technology there are jsut about dead nuts,
used to with the old ways of machining you had best go back and double check your cam timing, but out of the last dozen or so I have done lately , I think one was off maybe a hair, and was probably my pointer more then the cam, most nowadays are super close
its 2011 now not 1811 so things are a ton better
