Camera shopping, need help!

I dont know anything about digital camera's but I would like to stay under $500 (prefer in the $300 area) and get the best bang/buck. Im using it for company part and vehicle pics as well as family pics, etc. Dont have any special needs except I dont want the old digital camera 5 second delay after I hit the button, needs to take quick shots. Help me!
 
The only thing I can say is you get what you pay for.

Now with that said, determine what you need and don't need. Do your research. That's what the internet is good for. When you determine the features you want, then buy it. If it's more than $500.00, then save until you can affort to pay more. If you don't you will hate what you did buy and probably end up selling it at a loss and buying what you really wanted.
 
The Sony Cybershots are hard to beat. Just get one with the Carl Zeiss optics.

Justin, I was in exactly your same position about a year ago.... Only I had less money...;)

The best bang for the buck by far is this one.... The Nikon D40... Hell, I did so much research that I can even direct to the best place to buy it.... I still have the cheat sheet.... (It's almost fkn poetic that you should ask... I've done all your work for you)....

Call a guy named Eldar at Photocraft.... (703-250-5555)... The camera should cost about $399 and you can even buy the kit complete with lens, battery and everything for another $75- 100 bucks....

If you don't believe that I know wtf I'm talking about, here's a very popular website of a well known California photographer who shares his knowledge with camera buffs on the web from rookie to pro.....

Yes, they are new and have the full Nikon factory warranty.....

It's been about a year since I bought mine, but the price couldn't have gone up very much since then....

Call them all, if ya wanna and get the best price you can find. Then grind them all against each other for the lowest possible price to you....

That's the Sicilian way.....

Personally I'm holding out for the best price on the newest Nikon 18-250VR lens....;)

There's also another D40 kit wiuth everything on Amazon.com...

There are many of them on Ebay but I'd be VERY careful about buying one of those.... Always make sure that you get the original FACTORY waranty from Nikon- not some bullshit warranty from the seller.... Ebay is a fkn jungle...buyer beware....

The Nikon D40 is a smashing good camera for the price... IN fact- screw the price, it's just one great little camera.... at any price...read the review from Ken Rockwell- he's a pro shooter and knows wtf he's talking about....

i have the nikond80 its more than 500 bucks justin i got the wife a cheap canon and then had to upgrade to this one christmas she wasnt satisfied even though the other camera i thought took good pics. we use a Kodak 8.2 at work for accidents and damages and it does pretty well but for the money the nikons are very good. after i had the nikon for a while, i bought another lens for the pics that are far away. it cost about as much as the camera did. try here www.bhphotovideo.com

any of the High-End, Advanced Digital Cameras on this page.
the small ones are not for professionals. the images on the better ones will be more clear, and they will last longer. and still within your price range.

Thanks everyone! I ordered a refurb D40 and a refurb 55-200mm nikon lens, came up to $505 shipped vs $500 for a new D40 plus I still have the Nikon warranty. Tim was spot on, after searching and searching the new D3000 was less of a camera for the same price and you had to spend alot more to truly get a better camera.
