Car Show ideas and advise......

Somehow I have become the chairman of the car show committee of our town's annual downhome street festival. The festival's main attention getter is the car show.

What I need help on is organizing it.

Last year was the first annual. The car show had just under 50 entries and 50 trophies. Everyone walked away with basically the same trophy, whether you brought your $80K Camaro or you brought your old DD mustang. I feel like for the first annual, that was okay. But I would like to see it be more competitive. My idea was....

Three classes: Trucks, cars, motorcycles...

A first and second place trophy for each class.

A Best of Show (of all 3 classes combined)

A people's choice

and a plaque for the TOP 15.

Give me your opinions, input, experiences on the show you have attended and which one you liked better. Thanks in advance!

And this event is March 20, 2010 and since I am the chairman, I want a big VTCOA attendance.

you need class for vintage cars trucks etc.... new cars trucks etc.
class for stock class for modified series

I know in the trucks, there is usually a different class for pre 79 and 79 to present. Some classes have 3 trophies for each truck class. I am in a local car club and will try to help as much as possible. Shoot me some more questions!

Your ideas are very good ones! If I were you, I would keep it simple. Maybe look into having a band (50's music or something... low key, family friendly... no Slayer or 50 cent impersonators ). A band will give a venue to the family members that aren't necessarily too enthused about the car show. A DJ would work very well too.


..... Invite some local vendors to attend as well. Like the local Auto-zone, or Advance. Or maybe some of the local speed shops. Also, look into one of the local bar/cafe/pubs and see if they want to do a "remote" (beer tent), preferably with their hottest waitresses. If you serve alcohol, you or the vendor may need a permit. :dontknow:

Again, I would keep the judging/competition simple... people are there to have FUN! This isn't the Concourse 'd Elegance (yet).

That would be awesome Eddie! If I could pull some awesome rides in from different areas, my first impression as a chairman would be great. The festival is 9am - 4pm type thing. There will be all kinds of vendors there. Plenty to do for the kids, inflatable games, etc. Food vendors. Entertainment. It really is a fun day. It's all within about 2 city blocks.

From years of doing it a couple of suggestions.

Find a way to group the cars in their classes (parked together).
Provide 8.5X11 registration/ID cardboard sheets for the windshield that say: Look But Please Do Not Touch!!!
Don't go overtime. If awards are at 3:00 start at 3:00 and end by 3:15.

Awards...plaques are best for the top spots.
Avoid cheap trophies (plastic). The Chicago Area MOPAR Club tried Gold, Silver and Bronze medals on red, white and blue ribbons last year for all but the top in each class and best in show. They were a great hit!

Add special categories (Ladies favorite, Men's favorite, Mayor's Choice, etc.)

Have lots of food, maybe even something different than hot dogs and hamburgers...

And for Pete's sake..............(just who was Pete???)

Have a truck category!

Thanks Roy! The trophies are already here. That decision was made last year since everyone liked them. There are several classes including best truck! And the festival has at least 8 different food vendors. Should be a great day.
