Carpenters Post Up Please....

Basement space...have several steel beams at 8 ft. floor joists that run perpendicular to the steel beems at 9 ft. 8 in....previous owner started exterior walls at 10 ft.

Seems dumb to me...arn't 8 ft. ceilings just fine? Run ducts above and a dropped ceiling, just sister a few 2x4's on the freestanding walls in the interior to the joists??? Then even the steel beams are above the ceiling...right?

Mutt...you may regret ever responding to this thread...but thanks while you have the patience to put up with my questions.

Now I just have to see if 8 ft. is sufficient for me to practice a golf swing...that is the real test.

probably not to get a good swing...you have my number as well if you have any questions.....i have one question...being from florida i dont know what a "basement" is, can you elaborate:D

hey roy, i will come up and build it for you for:

#1- place to stay
#2- food (hey fat guys like to eat)
#3- gas money
#4- one of them new turbo kits from justin with all of the options

number 1,2 and 3 are negotiable, #4 is not:D

Strange contraption...rather than laying a pad they dig a hole and then partially fill it with cement...they insure that there are ample cracks so that you will always have fresh water in you basement...then then place all of the electrical equipment in the middle of the floor so you have to move it to the edges when you want to "finish" it. It is not plumbed, heated or cooled. It does not have electrical outlets or sufficient lighting...you are allowed to do that yourself...it has windows that look out into corrugated vertical shafts...

Strange things but reportedly good for wine and critters, and mothers in law.

Will you service my wife too?

Someone has to, I can't and am not allowed to try.

Yup...probably snow bound soon, and the wheels will be in California, the headers in Penn., and the steering wheel in Texas! That should keep her safe!

I will have a host of really dumb questions...will try to handle via pm to avoid too much laughter out there.

Questions like: will my 135 pancake compressor be strong enough to push a framing gun???

Roy
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAH,,,, BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA ,,,,, BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAH,,, BWAHAHAHAHAH - there, just didn't want you to escape all the laughter by taking it to PM!!! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHHA :D :D :D :D :D :D

Jerry was a UNION carpenter, when do we move in - now that he is disabled, it just takes him a little longer - you know how that is right :dontknow: :dontknow: :dontknow: :D :D :D

I will have lots of questions, because I am just going to start nailing 2x4's together...then coming here to ask questions...

This could be a horror story...but fun.

Do you know what Plumb, Level and Square are???? :dontknow: :dontknow: Do you have a full working knowledge of the isosceles (right angle) triangle, do you know the meaning of 3, 4, 5 and how to apply it :dontknow:

I think Kevan will need to do a pictorial DIY on this

QUICK, KEVAN, GET RIGHT ON THIS MAN :D :D

Yes, yes and yes...but getting to square is tougher than knowing what it is. I learned a lot about isosceles triangles in building fences on a cattle ranch...one of the two ways to get barbed wire fence to stretch tight!

So yes and no on the above...

I am not aware of the 3, 4, and 5 concepts...need help there. I will research it and see if I can find reference to it...

Learning is good...aching back is bad...

The biggest problem is throwing away wood...there seems to be so much waste...I know that every left over piece will have a use some day, so rather than storing wine, I will probably end up with a lumber left over yard...OCD is so tough to live with!

Learned a little late, that not all 2x4's in the pile left by previous owner...are the same length!

Learning that wall board is heavy!

My carpenter reference person says wallboard aka sheetrock aka drywall 12' x 4' x 1/2" (2 in a bundle) is about 100 lbs. 8' x 4' x 5/8" (2 in a bundle) weighs about 100 lbs. Average 1200 - 1350 sq. FHA house = about 120 sheets. Mostly 1/2" material. :dontknow: :dontknow: :dontknow: :D

He and his partner used to do 2 to 3 houses per day when doing residential, that is why he is old, beat up, worn out, and yes Roy, that damned shit is heavy - take it easy there old man, it will drive a good man into the ground ;) ;)

He is offering to hang some 8 lb. lead board with you, it is about 350 lbs per sheet

Is the lady in your avatar your supervisor???? :dontknow: :dontknow: :D

Carpenter person adding a PS: Have you checked your project area for Radon gasses and mold? It is common in basements and should be done before any construction is done - get the testers at your local home improvement center
