CENTERFORCE CLUTCH INSTALLED

Mine has 650 miles on it now.At first (under 200 miles) mine slipped,chattered and shuddered in reverse.going foward was no problem.I think it was due to not letting the pedal out all way while backing up.Works great now.Did a nice burnout the other night through 1st and 2nd :D .Can't wait til I get the gears installed.
 
Hang in there man, sounds like you've got the break-in blues. Don't sweat the small stuff. Wish we all could live by those words.:confused:

But as I mentioned..it's better. I still only have a whopping 30 miles on it. I won't be able to drive it again until the weekend.

I happen to smell it one time when pulling out onto the street which had a small incline and the truck starts to roll backwards when you let off the brake. Due to the way the street is you kinda have to drag the clutch a smidge but I am hardly moving.

I also smelled the clutch when trying to back up some ramps and change my oil. That sucked!! It really smelled that time. I called CF and the tech said they dont recommend driving up those things.

Other than a little chatter once and a while when pulling into my tight garage, it works great. No smell other than those two times when it had less than 500 miles on it.

I drove it again yesterday. I was travelling again all week. Went with my brother to discharge a few weapons...

Range parking was a little soft. I didnt want to drive my SRT on the soft grass. I did anyways. Here comes that freakin groan. Slipped noticably but didnt smell clutch. I notice that if I dont give it any throttle while driving in reverse, its ok.

I sincerely hope that this eventually stops. Forward gears are fine. No issues there. Its like this clutch doesnt like low rpm, high torque situations or anytime the clutch fights the weight of the truck with some resistance at a standing start. Only 40 miles on it.

Damn weather sucks. Still freakin raining....
 
A few have learned the hard way about the necessary break-in period. I drove like an old lady (I am an old man) for the initial five hundred...heard a little clatter, smelled a little clutch from time to time...but now, no smell, only occasional clatter, and hooks up like a 18 year old street walker!

Love that yours engages at half way...mine engages at the same point as the OEM...near the end of the peddle range.

Also love that Centerforce came here to help! :rock: :rock: :rock: That rates more business for Centerforce gang!!!

I would hate to say this, but you might want to drop it to inspect everything...I know its a pain in the butt, but it might save you a few hundred dollars if something just didnt go in perfect. :eek:

Wish you were closer, we could do it in a few house just to make sure..
 
I've actually replaced quite a few clutches over the years. I've never delt with a clutch that is so sensitive and has to be handled with kid gloves.

I was thinking of taking it apart again. Again, it only has 40 miles on it. Some people on this forum have clearly had the same issues. So, I may wait. There is nothing that I did incorrectly during install. My OEM clutch CLEARLY showed very little signs of abuse. After review of all my pictures, this was confirmed by Centerforce. There was nothing wrong with the flywheel, slave, TOB or pilot. All was just fine. Mild glazing was removed from the flywheel. I cleaned it the same way as most tranny shops. I just had high RPM slipping at the track.

I had a rather long conversation with Centerforce. I can actually say that they really stand behind there product. This is definately comforting. I was told that this could possibly happen and to just monitor..with milage. If the problem persists after a set milage, Centerforce will help me.

Im going to be around for the next week. Ill try to drive it a little every day. Im going to take a ride with my rug rats shortly...
 
Please contact me directly if your issues continue. After further conversation, I'm not convinced that anything major is wrong at this point. There haven't been too many clutch issues that have stumped us within the last 25 years - if need be, we'll 'figure it out. We're all "gear heads" like you and strive to make things work properly.

Sooner or later you're going to have to change out your OEM slave and master cylinder. I finally just changed mine thanks to Daniel and now I could powershift with confidence. It got to a point at high rpm's I couldn't get into gear. As soon as you have a problem with powershifting just change it out. I think the centerforce clutch is a little stiffer than the oem clutch so the plastic will start to give after a while.

I also agree, anytime you are close to the slave and master cyl...change them out. Under pressure the plastic that comes with our trucks just will not do the job...change it, the cost is minor and the impact is super.

If you want to be able to shift with confidence you must change and add the Boomer Gen IV shifter...no BS just fact.

I absolutely have no doubt that Centerforce stands by there product.

I now have about 200 miles on it. I drove the crap out of it over the weekend and last night. I am going to drive for another week, weather permitting. I will then make my return to the track one week from this Friday.

Does the slipping/groan still occur? Yes, but only when going in reverse trying to finagle the truck back into the garage. This is when I get shutter as well. Has this gotten any better? Hard to notice any improvement. Some have mentioned this issue exists until you drive 400+ miles. I am going to keep driving it and monitor. I will keep track of the mileage.

I've installed clutches in Ford trucks, Ford cars, Chrysler Turbo cars and never had any of these slip. I had one friend bring me his 88 Mustang and an SVO clutch. After paying me, he had no money left for a flywheel. We installed it, regardless. Flywheel was clearly fried. Right after the installation, we drove it for 20 miles. Then we began to pound the crap out of it. Got a little shutter but did not slip at all. I did the same thing to one of my friends 2.2 Turbo cars. Flywheel was burnt up. Put a new OEM friction clutch back in but with a pressure plate with more holding power...he was fine no shutter or anything. We raced it the next day.

I just don't get this. I was REALLY anal when installing my Centerforce. All was replaced but the pilot bearing. I never had ANY issues with hydraulics.

New friction materials..chemical bonding. I am most certainly confused. :confused:

oh...I have the B&M shifter with a 80641 T-Handle. Its like driving the old 455 TransAm with the M21 in it. Flashback:canabis: :D

I have over 300 miles on it. If anyone can clarify, how long did it take before your clutch fully seated and you didn't get that groan/smell?

Mine seems to be getting better. I still makes sense to me that the hardest thing on this clutch is the slipping while going in reverse. Forward is just fine.

400-500 city miles is fully seated per K.C

Never has a smell / groan with 2 stock ones, and 2 centerforce clutch sets, and ill let you know w/ the ACT....

actually I take that back, I had a few groans when trying to get that tranny aligned back in :p :rock:
 
Give it the full 500 city (stop and go) miles...this is vital...two hundred to go...you can get that this evening...

I was worried too...I am fully satisfied now...still an occasional chatter, but no smell and it hooks up perfectly...and over the past two weeks I have really been pushing "a lot" of power thru it.
 
I think my truck makes the same noise in reverse. Does it sound like the throw out bearing is making noise?
