cheap commuter car

I am looking for a decent used gas miser to drive back and forth to work. My work place is moving 22 miles further from the house and I don't want to put the miles on my truck!

Something like a late model Honda Civic or Toyota something. Easy and inexpensive to fix.

We bought my wife a Mazda3 5-door, and it has to be one of the best cars we have ever bought her. It (real, not sticker) gets 31-32 mpg, it has EVERY bell and whistle (including auto-stick, audio controls, leather steering wheel, projection headlights, and a bunch of other stuff). You can pick one up brand new for under 20k out the door.

Hey Nt,

I had a real good experience with my Alero which I had for 4 years. Somethings went wrong but were fixed quickly by the dealership. I had a 4 cyl, 5 sp., amazing gas mileage for the price.

I agree with Patrick that Mazda has some real nice products also.

A friend of mine just bought a '06 VW Jetta TDI station wagon and are getting the posted 60 mpg. They were just rear ended by an elderly gentleman doing 40 mph while they were stopped at a red light last week. He totaled his car, their little wagon is still drivable. It goes in this week to see what the damage is.

The VW made a believer out of me for safety. They are both alright, just sore and a bit beaten up.

Thanks, I guess I should have specified that I am looking for something in the $2-4K range. I don't want/need another payment, just something that I can pay cash for and be done with.
