Huh? It's nothing to do with looks. They were testing to see the difference between a regular setup that pulls the air through a throttle body then the intake plenum, vs. no throttle body restriction and infinite plenum volume. It would be super interesting to see what the results actually were.

I am curious as to how they shut the engine down and how hard that was on it when they did under full load.

I am curious as to how they shut the engine down and how hard that was on it when they did under full load.

They probably put the lid back on and got off the throttle. If they left it off and just cut fuel, it would go lean and boom. However, you could always kill power to the ECM. Injectors and coils no longer see signal, no spark, no fuel, no combustion, it just pumps air until the dyno quits spinning.
