Why is it so damn hard to check the oil in these trucks. I clean the dipstick, put it all the way in, pull it out, when i look at it there will be oil on one side, Splotchy, and the other a completely different splotch. Splotch is a word!...... I check it cold, i check it warm, i check it 2 minutes after shutting it off, i check it 20 min after shutting it off. I check it 3-4 times a week because its got me paranoid now! Same shit, I check it after doing an oil change and i know there is sufficient oil in there, its still hard to read.
Im at 2700 miles since my change ive put 2 quarts in (perfectly normal i suppose) my oil is dark enough to be perfectly distinguishable where it starts and ends
For illustrative purposes
one side

the other side

So i took a wire brush on a drill and scuffed it up to give the oil something to cling to and make it more readable Same damn thing.

Its like when i pull the dipstick out, oil clinging to the tube is smudging oil at random spots on the stick.

And please guys smartass posts are welcome here, but rest assured i am qualified to check my own oil, and wipe my own ass.

yes, it is a bitch to check. Try turning the stick around. Mine will do better when the label is upside down......2qts in 2700 miles is not out of spec but probably using more than the average truck. Mine never used more than a 1/2 qt over 3000 miles before I did the SC & build. Uses a QT about every 900-1000 miles now but I have racing rings in it and that is about the norm for them.

Edit...I didnt see your pictures...you have that silly stick they put in the 05s...I never could read the thing..try getting a standard oil stick.

No the picture is a generic picture i found on the web to draw on with "paint"
I have the right stick....

I did the spin the stick thing, thinking it would make both sides closer to identical. FAIL!

As far as oil consumption goes. I dont know of anyone that drives there truck as hard as I, and I also have 90k miles.

It usually takes 1-1.5 quarts. 2 went in the past two 3k mile oil changes because im so damn uneasy about this dipstick.

how many Quarts do you put in you SRT-10 ?

i thought i was the only one burning that much oil...i usually run 1 1/2 to 2 quarts between changes and its a pain to check. i thought i was burning my pistons when i checked and nuthin showed on the stick but my oil pressure is fine and running temp is where it should be

I had no idea these trucks all use oil? I guess I should check mine today.

I just checked mine and there is too much. Get it changed at the dealer thinking they know what they are doing. I am thinking this is not good, what problems does too much oil cause and should i be worried?

If it is only a little overfull its ok. Alot overfull and seals will start busting and tons of smoke will pouring out of the tail pipe b/c the truck will be burning oil in the cylinders. Not good.

As far as the dipstick. I hate that thing the 05's have the piece of wire with the five pentastar piece of metal at the end. The truck with a filter change is supposed to take 8.5 qts. I have a horrible time trying to read that POS after an oil change. I thought I was the only one. Glad I am not the only miserable SOB trying to read that piece of crap.

OK good I think it is just a little over full. It just touches the wire. I was going to start changing it myself anyways so won't have to worry. That dipstick is terrrible is there a different one we can get?

It's a complete bitch to read...over the weekend changed my oil and I can't get an accurate read....I figure theres a little over 9.5 quarts and it's not going onto the wire part, so it's good to me.......I've never owned a vehicle where it is such a mission to determine how much oil is in the engine...

i got the solution for you

1) remove dipstick

2) wipe with a cloth to clean it

3) now before you reinsert it, using your bare fingers wipe the dipstick again.

4) reinsert and remove, you have an accurate reading on the dip stick

Ive tried much more weird things in life, only to discover it was successful. The "pull out" method was not one of them... I think she got pregnant through her belly button.
Thanks for the tip ill try it.
