Just saw on the news that starting this Friday Chrysler is closing ALL of its plants for a month! WTF this is getting out of control:dontknow:

Harley did it a while back, for 2 weeks I think. What's the point of keeping a plant open and bleeding cash if you've got more than enough inventory? It's probably the smartest business decision they've made in decades.

They do the same thing with the copper mine out here. When they have a stock pile of refined product, they give the workers a little unexpected unpaid leave

chrysler normaly closes down for 2 weeks anyway for the end of the year. so what is another two weeks when your sales have droped and you have plenty of vehicle inventory to compensate for the month close.

Alot of companies do this in alot of different industries. I also agree that it is probably one of the better decisions that they have made. If cars are sitting, why make more??

The fact they only have enough case for 1 month of payroll plays into it.

GM and Ford are also extending holiday shutdown.

I think it is the automakers push to get the government to help them. The loss of tax money will have some states calling the White House 24x7

In my girlfriends home town their lumber mill has been shut down for 3 weeks in December and maybe more in the future they have cut the weekend shift until further notice as well. This is a US owned company and I don't hear bail out for them???.

I agree its a great way to save money. Right now nobody is selling cars so they are all just "stacking" uo in the holding yards. I support it.

One of the problems is the lack of financing available. The dealers met with Chrysler and said if money was available to the consumer that the sales would be there. The banks who got a hand out need to get off of some cash. Congress in all their wisdom should have put restrictions on the bailouts if the banks refused to lend money.

Agreed..smart move on their part..While it isnt the best for the workers, at least they will have a job to come back to when the plants reopen..
This economy is just a friggin mess these days..what makes anyone think it will get better by summer is beyond me. It took awhile to get to this point, and there is going to be no easy fix..

we dont completely shut down but from now till after the 1st we only run the ones who volunteer. the weather sucks in the northwest this time of year and most of our guys have ran hard all year so we look at it that way. most companies are doing inventory first couple of weeks in Jan anyway.

the thing that sucks is that they are only closing down the North American plants, so its effecting only people here in america, and its the american people they are asking help from with a bail out.

Things here are just plain dead. No one is doing well, and it doesn't look like it's going to change anytime soon.

Bill.
