cleaning inside of rims

I pulled my wheels off this past weekend to give them a good cleaning. I actually have some pitting of the aluminum on the inside of the wheel as a result of the brake dust. I may try sanding them and either applying a clear coat, or painting them black. Not sure which way I'm going to go yet.
 
What about using a product from Brillo callled "Strip and Shine". I guess its a Brillo "ball" (its more of a roll if ya ask me) without the soap and its rolled up in this weird roll thingy. On the front of the box, it says it for wheels too. Seems like its not rough really. The metal is allot finer then a regular Brillo pad. I picked up a box at the grocery store when I walked by and saw a pic of a wheel on the box. I went on to read it and it says its good for cleaning and polishing wheels. I don't think I'll use it on the face of the wheel but I dont think it'll hurt to try the inside! I'll have to post my results when I get to them the end of this week!!

Is it made of fine steel? If so I wouldn't use it. Some small steel particles could break/wear off and stay with the wheel and cause rust to form down the road.

It might be perfectly safe but this was my first thought when you mentioned Brillo.
 
Stretch told me about Armorall's wheel cleaner. I tried it and it does a real good job.
 
Thanks. I do pull the wheels, but only once a year to do a good cleaning of the calipers and wheels.

I will stick to the reach around for now, may try the toilet bowl brush idea.

After three weeks of not being cleaned while I was in New Orleans:eek: I had some pitting on my chrome wheels. The guy at Discount Tire told me about Nevr dull http://www.eagleone.com/pages/products/product.asp?itemid=1006&cat=5006 . I was skeptical but tried it anyway, and it worked very well! Removed most of the pitting caused by the brake dust. The only thing is that on the chrome rims it left a trace of fine scratches similar to swirl marks. But it still looks better than the pitting and staining that was there, and on the stock rims, you probably won't see it at all. Then I put Wheel Wax http://www.properautocare.com/wheelwax.html on them to protect them. The Wheel Wax does seem to help a little with the brake dust.

i use McGuires hot wheels wheel cleaner,it has a small amount of muraditc acid works real well.

I wonder if that is the same Never Dull that the navy uses on all the brass and such. I have used it to polish my intake tubing. I know it polishes really well, but I'm unsure how well it cleans.
 
lets everyone remember,if you have the OPTIONAL polished wheels they have a plastic coating on them.some chemicals could and will hurt the coating and then your screwed.on the (non polished STD wheels)you can use acid and never dull and probably a few other type cleaners.to check what kind of wheels ya have just take some car wax and try to shine a spot on the wheel.if your rag turns black the you have the bare alum wheels which can be polised up real nice.the factory OPTIONAL (polished wheel) ya cant do shit with unless you strip the plastic coating off.they do make a chemical for stripping these wheels but its a pita.
 
yup, had that problem too. pulled my wheels, give em a good cleaning, dried them, then painted them flat black. prob solved. and for polishing, try the mothers billet polish, its in a black label, not the red.
 
yep, if they are clearcoated becarefull what you use! mine are clearcoated and just plain windex works fine on the brake dust!;)
