Clearcoat remover, weekend project

Although this was on my wifes mustang, I thought I would share this for anyone that has this problem.

One of the wheels on my wifes mustang looked terrible, the clear coat was cracked all over and flaking off in some places.

Today I removed the clear coat, as best I could, with Auto Stripper from Auto Zone, and thought I would share my results.

For best results I placed the stripper on the wheel and would let it sit between 5-10 minutes and would hose it off at home. After doing this about 4 times, I headed for the local car wash, I highly reccomend using a powerwasher for best results.

After this I still had deposits of the clear coat and auto stripper on the wheel so I used steel wool and a dremmel tool to remove what was left. After doing this I waxed the wheel with mothers and re-sprayed 2-3 coats of clearcoat.

I took a photo of the Auto Stripper I used and an after shot, sorry I have no before photo. As you can see I need to clean the back of the rim still.

I have to say that this was a huge mess and I wold not reccomend doing this, unless your wheel(s) really need to be re-clearcoated. I am glad I only had one to do.

Yes I have been a little too busy, but we had a overcast day in the 70's, so I had a good day to knock my to do list down a little bit.

i'm about to paint my rims, and i'm not looking forward to scotchbriting between all those spokes....

Waxing the wheels before clearcoating wont work....clearcoat will peel off..probably wash off..:dontknow:

Yeah, I thought about that before I done that, but I wanted to wax them to buff out some small scratch marks, I put a light clearcoat on, so if I have to redo this it will be easier next time.

Rather than wax...use a polish and that should get the scratches and leave a surface that will hold the clear coat.

Some brands have progressively finer polishes...I use polish from Griot...there are four different polishes...use all four in sequence and the scratches are removed and the surface will be very clear and smooth.

Thanks for the info, if or when I have to redo this, I will try it. I am just glad to get the factor clearcoat off for the time being.

I am facing the same thing on my Volvo wheels...I may just buy it done...it is a huge job!
