Open Deck: The cylinder barrels are only braced at the bottom and the water jacket is wide open where the block and barrels mate with the head. (don't read into that...:D) Usually better cooling, cheaper manufacturing, and more likely to blow up when pushed to it's limits.

Closed Deck / Semi-Closed Deck: There is bracing closing off the barrel wall to the exterior of the engine block wher the barrels mate with the head. (Get your mind out of the gutter!) Usually stronger and less likely to blow a head gasket, but often restrictive to coolant flow.

I dunno - this gen3 block looks more like a closed? I dunno, maybe not...decking isn't exactly my speciality.
