The 427SOHC was supposed to compete against the HEMI in NASCAR but never made it. Idon't remember now but it was either NASCAR that disallowed it or it was Fords decision not to put a 600+ HP(detuned) engine in street cars.

They were then used in drag racing, and could be ordered over the counter for about $2,400.00

I think you are thinking about the BOSS 429, which was used in NASCAR from 1969 to about 1972 or so.

I bet a C-Note I'm right about the 427SOHC engine.:D :marchmellow:

LOL I thought he meant you could visually identify the regular side oiler, from a distance like the HEMI.

Sorry about that!:p :p

This is the SOHC motor witch is basically an FE 427 with Single Overhead Cam semi Hemi heads adapted.

I just wish I had bought the one when I had the chance in 1974.
It was still in the crate. The guy that had it was going to put it in his 67 Shelby Mustang but desided not to cut the shock towers for clearance.

He wanted 2400 or 2500 (what he paid for it) but I thought at the time that was outrageous and didn't buy it.:(

The engine in the shelby has inline afb's, and puts out 620 rwh, it is the nascar engine you guys are talkin about, just not an original engine, a new one, he says it tolerates high rpm all day long, dont know the cfm on the carbs, he stated it is the nascar version,I rode in the cobra..............

Ford made a 427 low riser,427 medium riser,427 hi riser,427 tunnel port, 427 SOHC, that I know of. It's hard to keep up with them all.:p :D
