In the film "Cool Hand Luke", Strother Martin coined the still famous phrase: "What we have here...is a failure to communicate". This apt remark seems applicable to life here on the Forum.

Much to it's credit, this family of "Rev Junkies" gets along pretty damned well. We are blessed with Admins and Moderators who are not only good at what they do, but good at who they are as well....and that really helps the cause of harmony.

But now and then someone will fire off a volley that hits a bit too close to home and cuts too close to the bone.... Particularly into the arena of unmitigated personal insults.

Now, I'm not saying that everyone needs to practice political frikkin correctness... God forbid that I (least of all) should be so sensitive as to suggest anything so disgustingly liberal.

And, quite frankly, I think we should all have the freedom to kid around with our budz in any way we want to...... The one's "gettin' after it" should judge how serious or innocent is the tenor of their banter.

But there are times when the conversation turns to serious issues of safety or dangerous conduct and the older guys like myself, Quicksilver, Jack (etc) may chime in and become the voice of caution. It is at those times when I believe it is inappropriate to respond to the contrary in a manner that employs caustic sarcasm and personal bashing.

Elders don't relish the idea of being the "voice of reason" simply to inflate their egos. They do it because they want to protect the younger members from killing or permantly injuring themselves. They do it for others.

They shouldn't have their good intentions met with insults about their "geezer status" or the inherant medical requirements of aging. They they should be valued for their elder status and appreciated for pulling the younger guys back when they unknowingly engage in risky behavior.

So next time one of us old guys tries to do what's right, I hope the young guns will keep it in their pants, show a bit of class and, if all else fails, bite your tongue before the well of good advice dries up altogether.

I'm not pissed off at all. So don't overraect. I'm just saying the most common thing in the world. Young people should respect their elders.

It may be considered "water under the bridge". But I just had to get it off my chest... About some sarcasm that went awry yesterday afternoon.... No biggie.. I just wanted to clarify some shit.

Well said Tim.I see immature elementary school name calling and personal attacks somethimes on here.It is unfortunate but if you look at the root causes sometimes the people don`t really know any better.

Some people are more educated than others and some ...well you know. Some people have personal agendas ,are envious or just (see above)

I do think the voices of reason on here are heeded for the most part. Anytime you get a collective group of individuals together from various social ,educational and economic backgrounds there is bound to be some odd interactions.

We should be glad the balance of reason greatly outweighs the imbalance of ignorance.

Remember ,there are some men who lift the age they inhabit, till all men walk on higher ground in their lifetime.

Please allow me to respectfully disagree. While I think that some discretion should be utilized when dealing with people in general....ie, some basic respect and avoidance of personal attacks....the elder gents deserve the same good natured ribbing of everyone else. In the same way, all of us deserve to be put in our place at times, and it's not always the young buck that is out of line. Now, if someone steps over the line, it might be best to send a private message and handle issues out of the public, where cooler heads can prevail.

To provide an example, depending on the highway and the person, safe speeds in certain areas can go from 130mph, to 110mph, to 90mph, to 70mph, to 50mph.....even if the speed limit there is 70 in all these accounts. Everyone has an opinion on what is safe, and what exactly is considered a "safe" speed in a certain environment. My father will strongly state that the speed limit is the highest safe speed on the road, and going over that is unsafe. Others will tell you that 5-10mph is still safe, and I could go on but you get the point. Regardless, if you go over the limit by 1 mile, you are outside of the law. The Autobahn doesn't have a speed limit, and I've heard that anyone going under 90mph is unsafe :dontknow:

To provide another example, some people on this forum (as well as others) think it's appropriate to add aftermarket items to thier SRT that clearly voids their warranty. Well, they blow something up, and then they joke about changing that piece back out with the stock part and then claiming under warranty. Well, to me, it sounds like the act of a common theif, but I've seen it come up here, as well as on jeep forums, and also diesel performance forums....which is why joe-scho always has to feel like a criminal when he get's warranty work done, which is BS

I like the elders and it's always good to have a differing opinion....it's fun, it adds a little spice to the mix, and sometimes it gives me a new option or new point of view, which is really kewl..........BUT, regardless of elder, young kid, or anything in-between.....you are voicing your opinion, and it's just that....you aren't right, but you damn well might have the percentages on your side, and if you do, you just might sway a few people, and that's good....

my two cents....

Disclaimer - I do not know exactly what this is referring to, so I'm not taking shots at anyone....just offering a point of view....oh, and I am 32, so I don't have much piss and venigar left, but I still don't know sheit :D

Your point of view is acknowledged............Although it barely recognizes the key issue.

This point is not about whether or not us "old guys" can take a ribbing or the obviously subjective nature of opinion.

It is about returning abusive sarcasm for sage advice.......

You've missed the point altogether........

No offense meant, bro.

Tim, I also have to disagree to a certain extent. I just don't believe that age=respect. Respect is earned, it is not something that can be accrued like a 401k. Now don't get me wrong, I have the utmost respect for Jack, but it has nothing to do with the number of years he has spent spinning around on this rock we call home. It instead has everything to do with the kind of man he is, and I would be willing to bet that I would have felt the same way about him 20 or 30 years ago. I also have the utmost respect for the 18 year old private that gives his life in service of his country, or for that matter just puts himself in that position. By the same token there are many folks out there that have reached a grand old age who don't deserve the shit I scrape off the bottom of my shoes. That isn't intended for anyone here, just to avoid any misunderstandings.

I'm not sure what the underlying issue was here, or who was out of line. But I will say this, "don't f*** with my friends, and Jack is my friend".

Hmmmm....

Well I find myself in the middle here..

I am a firm believer in the paradigm that respect is earned and not granted or blindly assigned based on age. There are alot of older people that quite frankly amaze me that they have lived as long as they have.

Having said that, I have learned the hard way that if you establish a sense of respect first....you can then joke away without consequence....

Lastly, the larger issue here may not be one of respect but of experience. At a certain age you come to grips with the fact that there is no such thing as safety at 130mph on a public road. I don't care how good you are (think you are) etc...130 mph on a public road is stupid and selfish.

Quite honestly I think all references to streetracing should be deleted by the mods as a public service and a general statement of what we stand for as a group.

When someone finally hurts someone and they want to claim it was an accident, I assure you that person's posts of previous street races will bite him on the ass....

All in all a good Post Silent D...hopefully it makes a difference....

Bobby,

I have all the respect in the world for you and your thoughfully expressed opinions. They are both reasoned and well phrased.

I am not trying to promote wholesale groveling to the elderly, due without merit and simply because of age... Although I believe that a modicum of that is both respectable and worthy of consideration. I also agree that there are a number of old codgers whose unmitigated temerity unduly expects the wholesale osculation of their hindquarters by demand.

In other words: Sure, there's lots of old bastards who deserve precisely DICK.

But this is about simple respect for those who are trying to help you....Irrespective of their age bracket... The fact that Jack is an older man is merely an ancillary component.....

Example: If you grabbed one of your kids hands as they were putting it in the fire.... being the elder and wiser Dad..... You'd be pretty offended and damn pissed off if the little bastage told you, " F.O. Dad, go take your Viagara and leave me tf alone....!"

End of explanation.;)

Damn, I'm still not sure what started all this (hopefully it wasn't me, but it probably was:eek: ) but I have to say it's a fine discussion and for the most part I can agree with parts of what almost everyone is saying.

I feel that everyone should be able to express their opinion, same as I can. I also realize that I'm never to old to learn something, be it from someone 80+ years old, or someone who is 18 or younger. We all have a knowledge base and none of us knows it all.

Not sure where the hell I was going with this, so I will stop there.

Oh, one more thing. I love damn near all you guys. You may hate me, but you can't stop me from loving you. And not in a gay way.:D

All we are is dust in the wind....

As a certified high-school dropout and self proclaimed 3rd class citizen I have to say; I mostly agree with you guys.:top: Mostly to the point when I want to be annoying and take a jab at someone for a good hearty belly laugh.:p Call me selfish .... because it's true:D :D :D :D

Yeppeeeeeeeee. It wasn't me.:D :p

Okay, don't know who may see it on the other thread, so I thought I would do a copy/paste of what I said there.

Here you go.

Well, well, well Greg. Making friends are we.

Just so everyone knows, Eric (Ram From Hell), Pete (Dallas), Mikey (hell, you all know who Mikey is) and myself met Greg and his son Drew (that kid was sure transfixed on the Hooters by the way) last Sunday at Hooters. Greg is a real neat guy. He is intense, but that's his style. I kind of liked how he was flipping Mikey crap on some thread before he even met Mikey. Greg probably should have held on for a little longer before flipping some of the crap that he has, but he has tried to fit in as he is.

Jack. I hope you can find it within that heart of yours (you do have one don't you ) to forgive the kid. I personally think he's a fine addition to the family.

Well, at least now I know what Django's other thread was about.

Damn, just noticed that the Smilies did not come over from the other thread. Oh well, insert as feel apropriate.:D :p
