In the film "Cool Hand Luke", Strother Martin coined the still famous phrase: "What we have here...is a failure to communicate". This apt remark seems applicable to life here on the Forum.
Much to it's credit, this family of "Rev Junkies" gets along pretty damned well. We are blessed with Admins and Moderators who are not only good at what they do, but good at who they are as well....and that really helps the cause of harmony.
But now and then someone will fire off a volley that hits a bit too close to home and cuts too close to the bone.... Particularly into the arena of unmitigated personal insults.
Now, I'm not saying that everyone needs to practice political frikkin correctness... God forbid that I (least of all) should be so sensitive as to suggest anything so disgustingly liberal.
And, quite frankly, I think we should all have the freedom to kid around with our budz in any way we want to...... The one's "gettin' after it" should judge how serious or innocent is the tenor of their banter.
But there are times when the conversation turns to serious issues of safety or dangerous conduct and the older guys like myself, Quicksilver, Jack (etc) may chime in and become the voice of caution. It is at those times when I believe it is inappropriate to respond to the contrary in a manner that employs caustic sarcasm and personal bashing.
Elders don't relish the idea of being the "voice of reason" simply to inflate their egos. They do it because they want to protect the younger members from killing or permantly injuring themselves. They do it for others.
They shouldn't have their good intentions met with insults about their "geezer status" or the inherant medical requirements of aging. They they should be valued for their elder status and appreciated for pulling the younger guys back when they unknowingly engage in risky behavior.
So next time one of us old guys tries to do what's right, I hope the young guns will keep it in their pants, show a bit of class and, if all else fails, bite your tongue before the well of good advice dries up altogether.
I'm not pissed off at all. So don't overraect. I'm just saying the most common thing in the world. Young people should respect their elders.
