Can someone help me? I have no skills. I am getting a flag that says my Start -up disk is full, I do not know how to free up space.:( the computer is an older Mac. It has been freezing up on me, And is very slllloooowww.any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance in case it locks up on me.

Not a MAC person, but is there anything you can bak up and delete of the main drive?

wil

Come on guru's this man needs help!:marchmellow: :) :) :D

I wish I knew Mac's better.

The startup disk on a MAC is the main hard drive. It seems as though your hard drive is near capacity.

Start with the easy stuff...

1. Empty the trash. If you delete a lot of stuff and never empty the trash, it's not really deleted.

2. Move pics, vids and audio stuff to an external drive. (Or add an internal drive)

3. If you use an email program, make sure that you are not deleting emails and leaving them in the trash in the email program.

4. Not sure if this applies to Macs but, you should clean out your temp files too.

5. Clear your browser cache too...

A little more complicated, but I believe Macs have a disk utility that you can use to "Erase Free Space". You might poke around and try that too.

That's about all I can tell you right now. If I had a Mac in my lap instead of this Compaq I could do more... sorry.

Found this, don't know if it will help...

Use disk utility and Verify the DISK. See if there are any errors. If there are, you may want to boot from the OS X DVD and do a disk repair.

Thanks for the help, I can not get on for more than a couple of seconds without a freeze up. I am on my phone right now typing this. I think I'm starting to Jones. Thanks again

JRSVIPER, I can tell you that if the hard drive is full, computers will lock up and freeze. I am not sure if this is the problem you are describing. If it is, the way I have fixed them in the past is to (again PC's not MAC's) is to remove the laptop hard drive and put it into a portable hard drive case and plug it into another computer and remove unnecessary files then install it again and clean it up.

This is a good solution. And the cases are pretty cheap now.
Of course, this solution also requires a second, working computer...

Wish I could be more help.

not a mac person... but try deleting programs that you dont use... free up at least 30% of your computer's memory.... hope this helps..

delete progams you can reinstall and run a defragmentor program, you will get space and speed back, then you can go through files you no longer need or want. just make sure to empty the trash, then it perminatly deletes them, not just moves um

or can u not get on long enough to do so?
