What kinda mods are there to help keep these things a little cooler? I try to keep it as cool as I can at the track, but it wont stay below 200, even on 50 degree nights. I already have the 172 thermostat, not so sure it made a difference. I was thinking electric fans and electric waterpump would be ideal to keep the water cooling while staging.

manual override fan switch?????

I keep hearing the same thing, I had my puter flashed for the fan to come on early, and even on the hottest days in traffic, mine dont go over 180:dontknow: I even took off my extra fan , because it made mine run hotter going down the hwy:confused:

SCT tune, you can have the fan come on sooner!!

I have a stage II flash from boomer. Can you send these off to get modified for the fan to come on sooner? Mine runs 200 all day long.Got a 170 t-stat but that did not make alot of diff. I think boomer got his from B&G.I talked to him awhile back and all he said he could do was sell me his fan kit!! Typical salesman! :D :D

I used to have Boomer's flash and was happy with it except for the fan temps. He told me you couldn't lower them much because it would put to much strain on the stock hydrostatic/power steering system.

After I went with my headers I got even more concerned about underhood temps and bought a flash from Dan at DC Performance. Now, like Mr. Stinker, my coolant temps are normally right around 170 and never exceed 180, even in the recent 90+ degree weather.

The factory fan setup moves plenty of air for cooling and will do the job if programmed for a lower target temperature range. I imagine some kind of manual switch could work, too. By the way, I have had no issues with the power steering pump or system.

Hope this helps.

LOLOL LIke Hunter said, contact B@G or DC, and you can send it to them, tell them NOT TO CHANGE ANYTHING ELSE, be very firm about that;) they may mistakingly flash the entire deal.
and tell them to reprogramm the fan to come on so your temps stay around 170-180, Mine has been done too for a good while and no pump problems;)

beats the heck outta running a loud external fan:D

with my previous xmetal flashed pcm - mine would usually be between 200 and even went up to 220 once ! but after the DC flash it never gets over 190 even in the hotest days (and it gets HOT here ) .

i still kinda dont understand the lower Tstat deal(you guys dont need to explain it to me). if you take a truck running with a 195 Tstat at 200 degrees and put a 170 Tstat in it. the thought is that the 170 Tstat will open up quicker and cool down the motor. BUT the reason a Tstat is set at lets say 195 is to let the coolant cool down longer in the radiator. so really if you think about it although a 170 opens quicker it is letting hotter water run throught the motor then if you had the 195 in the system. so really the idea is to keep the coolant in the radiator for as long as posable to let it cool down more.

and another BUT most vehicles have a set operating temp dont matter what Tstat you put in them they will run at that temp.

I guess I was trying to see what alternatives there are out there other than a SCT. Not really familiar with the SCT, but can I have it only change the fan temps and not change anything else due to that I am using a VEC?

I have two electric fans that helped mine a LOT.That is until the SPAL controller went bad :( .Now it is usually around 200,until I get in 6th,and it drops to 170-185.

As Stinker Stated ,Be very firm about what you want done to fan temp with Dave at B&g performance. He does not like lowering the fan turn on to 170.:dontknow:
The better alternative is go with the S.C.T.,You will love it!!!!

If well respected tuners don't like lowering the fan turn on temps, should we be doing it ? What might the long-term result be ? :dontknow:

The explanation I was given,(if memory serves me right)was the fuel economy and the fan Stays on longer:dontknow: .My answer was I live in Florida,Not in Michigan,I,ll deal with the fan on longer.I have run at a consistent 170 degrees and never had an issue(16,000 miles) Even at temps at/above 100 degrees on my overhead.

SCT

I have the SCT programmed by Dave at B@G also. I love it! Fan comes on sooner and cycles more frequently. It never runs over 180 even on the 100 degree days we've had recently.

I did have to replace my power steering pump within a few weeks after intalling it though.:dontknow: Don't know if that caused it or not. No trouble since though- 20,000 miles and many trips to the track later.
