Hope you guys dont mind, I have a guy at work that has a 1971 vette with a 350 in it. He does not drive it much because at 65-70 mph says it sounds like it is screaming, I asked what rear end gears he has, But he didnt know. He wants to replace the 4-speed tranny with a 5 speed in hopes of a fix. Can you guys help me point him in the right direction. He actually asked if i could ask my truck club guys for help. Gotta love him for that.

it would probably be cheaper to replace the gears,

he can get close to finding the ratio by raising the rear of the car, rotate the rear tire one full turn(mark tire with chalk or something) and count the revolutions of the driveshaft

Richmond 5-Speed Overdrive Transmissions

Designed to be bolt-in replacements for Ford or GM vehicles and based on successful NASCAR-style technology, these transmissions are rated at 600 ft/lbs TQ to confidently handle the demands of street performance, hot rods, muscle cars, and racing. Their gear ratios offer smooth yet aggressive acceleration: 1st 2.89 or 3.33, 2nd 1.89, 3rd 1.31, 4th 1.00, 5th .77, and they have 10 or 26-spline input and a long shifter for the ultimate performance and durability

Or just change the rear end gears :D :D :D

Or look for the tag on the cover:D :D :D

Way way way way way....cheaper easier to change the ring/pinion in the rear end.

i would go for a ride with him & see what its really doin.

then check the assend ratio.

if its 4.10 plus. drop her down to 3.90's 0r 3.70's & do the tranny swap

OR a Gear Vendors set up:rock:

see if you can find out what rearend he has . could have a 10 bolt or a 12 bolt. I also recommend that he just recommend he change the gears to something a lil more streetble like a 3.08, 3.23, or even 3.31.

Tell him i would be interested in buying his old gears, hell if my back was messed up right now I would even do the swap...

However if he would still like to his gears, he can swap in a TKO 500 which is a 5 speed. I believe it will require driveshaft modification and the trans is about $2k i think

Keep an eye on the tach. Clutch might be slipping.

thats a good one:rock:

Sounds like 4.10's in the rear. My dad had a 62 Vette with the 4 speed and 4.10's and on the interstate it was turning over 3500 rpm to run 80. Bad bitch from a dig though.

One other cheap fix is a Saginaw 3 speed with overdrive.

Auto in a classic Vette = FAIL.

...... Of course, that is just my opinion. :D :D :D ;)
Doofas a Saginaw 3 speed is a stick shift and I do believe they were an option, rare in a vette though, got one with OD and one without. The vette ones had a shorter tailshaft than the cars or trucks, full syncro also and gears that are as strong as a muncie 4 speed. The OD unit is a bit lighter duty and the kick down switch should be moved from under the gas peddle to the shifter ( like a splitter)so you can let off the gas during the kick down (or risk blowing the planetary gears in the OD), but, you can get 6 gears out of it by moving the switch.:D :D :D
