We have coyotes in our yard on a regular basis. Can hear them in the neighborhood every night. As a matter of fact tomorrow evening a coyote specialist is coming to a wine gathering here at the house to talk to people about their behavior.
They are a very valuable scavenger, their main diet is mice, rats, shrews, rabbits and bugs. They are opportunistic feeders and will jump at the opportunity for dog or cat food, and occasionally a small pet cat, or tiny dog.
If your pit bull encountered a coyote there would be no match at all. The usual weight of a coyote is about 35 lbs, your pit would have a coyote on the run in about five seconds.
Not trying to moralize here, just warning that the elimination of one coyote means hundreds of rodents and thousands of bugs that will not be eaten...every year. One research project indicated that if coyote's urinate on your flowers and shrubs, the deer will not eat them! That alone has us interested in keeping the critters around...deer seem to be able to pick the most expensive plants for their grazing!
