D.C. Change of plans

I have orders to move to Andrews AFB near Washington DC Nov 4. We have been on the on-base housing list for some time now, but evidently not long enough. http://www.andrewsfamilyhousing.com/Files/JNCO-SNCO 3 bedroom - Tucson.pdf
I found out yesterday that we have 9 families ahead of us and wont be able to move in for quite few months. So we are looking for home rentals, or to buy a home. Not knowing much about the area, i dont know which neighborhoods to avoid. I also want to keep my commute down to 30-40 minutes and less than 25 miles if possible as my 10 is still my DD.

Any tips or leads would sure help as we are 2 weeks out and currently homeless. 1 nov. Looking to spend 1200-1800 a month.
