Dash Speakers.

I bought new front and rear door speakers for my QC (Boston Acoustics) to replace the Infinitys, want to replace the dash speakers also...

But in looking at the dash... I dont see how to get the stock 3.5" ones out... there appears to be no "grille covers" to remove, only one large panel than spans the length of the dash.

Anyone ever take this panel off to yank those speakers and replace? I like doing my own work, but Ultimate Electronics also offered to install for 40 bucks....

When I installed extra tweeters on my '03 Ram, the top panel (entire length of windshield) had to be popped up & out. The clips that it snaps into are tight! I started in the center and worked my way outward...just be carefull if using any kind of pry tool to not scratch the dash. I used a door panel trim tool, to leverage it against the dash with a rag under it.

I started at the drivers side and worked toward the passenger. It pops up first, then straight back. Angle it as soon as you can to avoid a scratch on the pillar cover. After that it is easy.

You will find that replacing the stock speakers with aftermarket ones won't help your sound out any better, well except maybe the sub. The only way to improve the sound quality is to get rid of the stock amps altogether and replace with aftermarket ones. I replaced my stock speakers first before going the route I am going now, see my other post Updating Stock Sound System, and the sound was not any better with the stock amp. If you really want to turn it up you have to have an aftermarket amp. Keep in mind each speaker in our trucks is crossed over at the amp so the frequency each speaker receives is still the same. If anything you will have better speakers that are producing the same distortion because the amp can't produce the power your new speakers can handle. I still can't get over how the stock amp as small as it is was designed to drive 5 speakers. The sub amp is a joke too. The stock amp is mounted under the dash upside down with no room to disapate heat.

I give the SRT-10 sound system two thumbs down, for what we paid for these trucks you would think they would at least put a true 500 watt system in like the sticker says.

My guess is that each speaker gets about 30 watts rms / 50 watts peak based on the size of the amp and the distortion the speakers put out when the sound is turned up. Good luck installing your speakers, don't forget the dash 3.5's is a 2 way speaker that contains a midrange and a tweeter.

The stock system does suck badly all around. I have completely removed all amps, all speakers, and the head unit for a complete overhaul. The change is amazing. I even removed the stock sub, packed the enclosure with poly fill and installed a different driver for the stock look but much better performance and less boominess. I can now tune the system easier to a much more palatable mix that suits me and is not over bass"ed by the stock system.

I also like the 7" Nav screen and ability to play DVD movies through the system.

The Bostons went it great and easy in the doors, took me about 1 hours to do all 4 doors.

They did help the sound better, I have better highs, and then I also used the time to adjust my upgraded subwoofer amp settings.

One thing that did piss me off was the front door speakers are just 6x9 woofers, and no high signals goto them... they crossed them over... I think that I will have to be replacing the stock mid/high amp with a better one, maybe use the Rockford Fosgate 360 unit to help integrate, they are local here and maybe I can go down and talk with them about if the unit will work well for my application.

Appreciate the offer, but I did not buy the dash speakers yet.. as I was waiting to see what the concensus was on the situation for removing that panel.

I am driving the truck to Cali Thursday, and coming back on Sunday.

I will be in Orange County and Newport Beach area, at the Sand Sport Super Show in the Orange County Fairgrounds.
