Wife is pregnant, baby pops out in Feb. We plan on stocking on groceries. Just bought a "pre-owned" 14 Cu/Ft deep freezer for $100. Getting my sams club card tonight.

Thinking of a vacuum sealer. Anyone have any comments on what to look for or steer clear of?

Cant help you with the vacuum sealer but just some advice on buying a ton of food to save money. Stocking up can cost you more than buying over a period of time. People tend to buy more of high price items when they can buy cheaper in bulk. Problem is you would not have bought as much had you bought one unit at a time.

You will also have increase in related costs...you have to save enough to pay for the freezer...the freezer costs money to run everyday and can incurr very costly repairs..especially a used one. All of these extra costs would have bought a lot of groceries in the long haul.

Not saying you wont save money but just pointing out some variables..congrats on that package coming in Feb...will change the whole household.

We shop the buy one get one free meats that rotate weekly between 3 different side by side local grocery stores. You buy what you need for the week and the double items go in the deepfreezer. But i see where people can fail in these efforts.

I live on a military base with free electricity. I bought $240 in groceries this month and got $180 in free meats, I dont have room in my freezer for icy pops!

And my wife is a health food fan, and she wants to blanch our own home grown organic vegetables for the baby. My father, uncles, brothers, and cousins kill dozens of game throughout the year and i have no room for it.

But thanks for the different perspective, sometimes it helps to get an outsiders opinion, thats why i asked.

:D I spend 240 a week for food    LOL damn you people eat like birds :dontknow: :D My lights can and have gone out before I'll do without food damn it :marchmellow:

Food saver makes a good vaccum sealer. Actually had it for 6yrs.But like a schmuck paid 300 bucks when they first came out now you can get the upgraded version of the one i have for under a hundred bucks. Steaks can last 6months or more without freezer burn. Fish only lasts a few months. Also you can seal anything chips ceral etc. Parmasean and fresh romano last forever sealed so you do save money on some things.

That is about what Christine spends on wine a week...but she does allow me to have my cigars...but I only smoke the cheap ones, that's my story and I am sticking to it!

Best way to freeze fish is in water. Place in ziplock bag, fill with water then freeze. Keeps fish fresh for more than 6 months. Other than that a food saver is great. I use mine a lot for game.

As was stated above, I have the Food Saver and it works perfectly. No freezer burn and you can actually see the food and know what you are pulling out before it thaws.. :)

The rolls of bag material are a little costly but saves the cost in wasted food and they are also reuseable. Just cut the bag a little large the first time and use it several times.

you can also use a paper/carbord 1/2 gallon milk carton. They are coated on the inside. Simply put the fish in, fill with water and freeze. Since they are in a block of Ice there is no need to have it air tight. Simply make sure the fish are all under water before you put it in the freezer.
