A milestone or kilometre sign is one of a series of numbered markers placed along a road at regular intervals, typically at the side of the road or in a median. The historical term milestone is still used today, even though the "stones" are typically metal signs. The Milepost is also the name of a publication about the Alaska Highway. More closely spaced signs, with fractional numbers, and signs along a railway or beach also occur.

As you continue through any state, you should see mile markers and the numbers will increase or decrease depending on your direction. Regardless, the numbers on the other side of the highway should match their counterpart across the median....

I believe the mile markers were setup along our highway system by Pres. Eisenhower and his staff when they did the interstate system. It was for logistical/military purposes.

Also, there is something about "for every 5 miles of highway, there must be 1 mile of straight, no overpass, no median highway". I think it was so that the military could use that stretch of road as an improptu landing strip.

I'll try to remember where I got the info from and post a link.

Highway System
The United States highway network consists of 4 million miles of roads and streets. Highway bridges also make up a critical link in the Nation's infrastructure. At present, there are about 600,000 bridges on the entire highway network. State and local governments control most roads and bridges in the United States, but all highways serve as part of an integrated national network.

The Interstate Highway System accounts for only 1 percent of all highway mileage but carries 25 percent of the total vehicle miles of travel. With the completion of the Interstate System in the 1980s, the focus shifted toward maintaining and improving the system, improving traffic flow, and upgrading connections with other modes of transportation.

Just thought this may help...if you take the total miles of highway x the amount of milemarkers....well....there's a bunch of them out there.

OK so you have 2 SRT-10's 200 miles apart travelling at each other at 80 MPH. 45 minutes later this phone call takes place.

Red: Where are you?
Silver: Mile marker 140, where are you?
Red: Mile marker 200.
Silver: OK, we are only 60 miles apart.
Red: Wait, somebody has put the wrong signs on the highway.
Silver: What?
Red: Yeah, my signs are all wrong. My numbers are getting smaller and yours are getting bigger.
Silver: Uh, dude, what?
Red: My signs are wrong!
Silver: Uh, dude you know that the numbers get smaller or bigger depending on your direction of travel.
Red: What?
