Door handles and mirrors

Just curious as to how many of you guys have had your door handles and mirrors painted and how well they have held up. One of the better body shops in town that I take my stuff to said that the texture style of these handles and mirrors do not make for ideal painting and that it is hard to guarantee the finish after a few years.

I am not really interested in the Cal-vue mirrors since they are a little too small for me.

Suggestions???? Opinions????
 
I was curious as well. My interior A pillars are painted and have a few chips in them. They are chipped in places that are not even touched.
 
they should ruff it up before paint.
Mine are smooth as a babybutt and still look like new.
I got the grill arround the windshield whipers painted like that as well.
Glossy black grill sets off the truck IMO
 
They need to be sanded smooth before painting. The people in the PT Cruiser community do a lot of mirror painting, my wife's have been painted and they came out looking great and have for the past 5 years. Just have to be prepped right.

if the shop or whoever paints them use quality paint and clear they should last a long time

i painted my handles myself. turned out great and havent had any problems with them. my mirrors are next once i get time.

I've done lots of painting in the past and I believe its all in the prep. I haven't had any problems with peeling or chipping. And if you take it to a decent body shop and it does peel or chip I'm sure they will redo it.
 
my mirrors have been painted for 3 years now and the paint has held up great. all in the prep as they say.

They need to be cleaned really well to get any wax, silicone or contaminants off before you sand. Very important because if you dont when you sand it will get imbedded in the plastic.

Got any pics of the window cowl painted? I want to see how you had it painted-whether they painted the whole thing-including all the air vents OR just painted tha major sides and up around the vents??????

FYI Paul, the (older) Jeep Grand Cherokee handles are identical to our handles, but have a smooth finish. . . ;)

I don't have the money to buy more hardware :(

Truck had to go into the shop since someone bumped into me at a stoplight. I figured while I had it in there I would get the mirrors and handles painted. I just told them I wanted them to clean and then sand them smooth and then painted. We will see how it goes... I should probably just leave well enough alone.. :(

this was just after I had an encounter with a concrete rail on the highway so its no good but you get the picture :p
I'll be able to post so more end this week when it's all fixed:argh: :p

I have this stuff called "Sand Free" and you just clean up the plastic with a grease remover,spray it with this Sand Free and then primer and paint,NO SANDING,Works excellent. You should be able to buy it an autobody supply shop,thats where I get mine from.
 
Paint chipping on plastic parts has very liitle to do with sanding or the quality or paint, you need a high quality elasticizer because plastic flexes and the paint will "peel" off. Also when you add the elasticizer the paint wont match exactly...

I painted many plastic parts (including mirrors) on my old hemi and they all work fine...

i took them apart and painted them, its cheaper than buying new headlights:D
 
I have my mirrors and door handles painted. It was done by a professional and he said it was a PIA. Anytime you paint plastic there is a few extra steps besides the Obvious (sanding them smooth). So far they have held up with no shrinking, peeling, chipping or cracking.

thats what i want to do but the last set of headlights i took apart were a b!$ch
