I'm interested in what you all think of a college degree as an investment in this current age. I'm currently 4 classes away from my bachelors in business and am beginning to really look at what this has cost me vs. the perks.

The Bad
I'm sad to report that it seems like I and hundreds have been mislead about the real value of a degree in my opinion. I keep reading articles about the actual cost/value and see that more often than not most if not all the students whom graduate really don't make that much money over someone with just a high school education over a life time. This also takes into account the cost we as students will have to pay back over what seem like vast odds in this day and age. I just find it sad that I have been working so hard for what many people once considered a really prestigious achievement and see that its just as hard if not harder to survive after receiving it? I say that cause now for the next 100 years I got to pay off my loans ect. and then risk being overqualified or having no experience with a degree. Kinda depressing if ya ask me:(

Here's an interesting link for those going to school, thinking about going or those with kids getting close about cost value ect:

The Good:
I'm probably.....:D smarter and now I have a piece of paper that says I worked hard towards a goal and achieved it. And if I get lucky enough to find a job that pays decent/alright I can go for a professional degree which still has value these days. Other than that I have to say a bachelors just makes me feel and that's the saddest thought.

Whatcha all think I'm curious?? Maybe I'm missing something that I don't see in the articles and news but man it seems the whole place is going fruit cake and the education system and its perks too:mad:

An old friend of mine had a great example about two brothers. Basically one took money for college, invested it, worked a "normal" job and came out way ahead of the other brother that got a degree.
I can't remember all the specifics of it.
I can say that I have landed in the field I am in, not because of college, but from who and what I know.

The real money comes with a post-graduate degree from what I've seen. And there is more value to a degree than just what kind of job you land.

Think of your degree as an invitation to apply for a job:D because without one you won't even get an application:( then look at it as a stepping stone to a higher degree, just think in a few years (just taking a couple of classes a semester) you could get a PhD. and give lectures all over the country for $10-20,000 a pop:rock:   :D :D
And then there are the research grant, you know those thingies the government throws millions of dollars at to find why like Why do Nats Fly :D :D :D

School was never for me. I just plain hated sitting in a classroom with bright lights and teachers who prolly shouldnt be teaching. For me I went straight to the field, learned from my mistakes and now I can call myself a profesional at what I do. I make twice minamal wage and never graduated high school. Im not rich by any means but I get by and im happy with where im at. I believe if you have a passion (lets say marine biologist or doctor) the only way you can do it is to attend college. Thats awsome more power to you, but if you go to college just to satasfy your parents/meet girls/party I think its a waste of time. I know many people who finished college and then bartended or waitressed because there were no jobs or they paid less.... it didnt make sense to me. Anyways thats my two sense I really hope you find work after school and if not say F it and do what you love.

quit school become a man whore:D

really keep bangin on it bro, you want get anywhere today with out an education, period

I have a bachelors of science in criminology and psychology , I work for my family putting up tents, what Im saying is alot of people get a degree in what ever they want not really anticipating the future, it all depends on your individual work ethic and social skills to get what you want in a job/pay, some of the richest people in the world dropped out of high school or college never receiving a degree but they worked extremely hard for what they have. I see nothing wrong with a higher education of any level, many valuable lessons are learned on that path that can make the transition into the work force easier and personal wealth for you then some one with fewer of the skills you acquire in college, personally I am glad I got the education I have even if I don't use it

And there is more value to a degree than just what kind of job you land.
bob is right....my youngest who is a freshman in college sometimes gets frustrated with his classes he "doesn't need" and he still doesn't know which major to pursue,BUT i can tell you ive' noticed a big difference in the way he handles himself and articulates his thoughts just talking to him on the phone. he has matured and has gained imeasurable knowledge, he just doesn't realize it:D

I am doing ok but with a piece of paper behind my knowledge I would be making 20K more a year. With that said I would be paying well over 20K to make that money and when would that allow me to bank what I have so far??????

Roy has probably been writing a post on this for the last hour.... so that's why he hasn't shown up on here yet. :D  ;)

GET THAT DEGREE.... you WILL NOT be able to even apply (like Wifey said) without one. That is, unless you want to go into a commission pay job (sales/dead-end, cut-throat), be a truck driver, or work in a high-labor field.

I have over 8 years experience in my field, owned my own company, and have a killer resume..... I can't even get a call back because I don't have that piece of paper. I am moving back to my home town... and as soon as I get there, I'm going to start banging away at getting a degree. I have been very successful for a short while. But, in this day and age, when shit goes down, you will find yourself out in the cold real quick. Many people my age and younger are much further ahead than I am, because they caught up and stayed stable. Keep on it, stay focused, and COMPLETE that which you have worked so hard for. You'll be glad you did.

No worries on me completing the degree, heck i've spent so much of myself to get it, id be a fool to not complete it. And I do believe in having the degree but I just find it funny these days how under valued they seem when it takes so much time, effort and work to get them. Ive been lucky not to spend what others have thank god its only gonna cost me round 40k but I really feel for some people I know and others I don't whom have spent 100k and up just to get it done and like mentioned in some earlier posts, they are working at a bar or some retail job.

I see you know Roy well too lololol to funny!

I really want to get an engineering degree, just really cant stand schooling and cant afford it. I considered joining the military and having them pay for it. but idk im still young and have a little bit of time to mull it over :dontknow:

A college degree is a foundation....you have to build on it to get a sound structure...I have a BA in bus admin, BS in criminal justice and a masters in accountancy..........a degree really means nothing without experience...that is when you will pass others...if you expect to make big $$$ as soon as you graduate you will probably be disappointed....get the education....one day you will be happy you did...

Ok I'll bite and tell my story....

I was 17 years old and droped out of school in 10th grade. I went straight to the oil field working on a drilling rig. Within 6 months i was hooked the money was great and only working 3 months out of 6 " 7 days on 7 days off" was even better.... after a year i started moving up.. and moving up quick i had proven myself and i made sure i knew my shit.. to this day i have dreams of knocking off wing nuts with a 16lb sledge hammer. I love it i honestly enjoyed working hard and getting paid to bust my ass... after another year i moved up again but this time to driller. I was 21 years old with a multi million dollar drilling rig in my hands. and again i love it and i protected it and my crew. I learned alot and i mean alot of stuff some of the guys i worked with were more like a father figure than my real dad. just because they tok me under their wing and made sure i didn't get hurt and what not. anyway after about another 10 months our main man obama got elected. soon after the land drilling shut down pretty much and i was laid off " My crew was the last crew to get the ax in the entire company" after i was laid off and honestly could not find a job i told my self i'm going to get a degree... i had to take a hard look at myself and figure out if i really wanted it. i started school that August it took me a while to think about what i wanted to do and i picked avaition. I've always wanted to fly so bam there it was.... I will never regret wanting to go to school i've got 2 more semesters until i get my Ass. degree "haha" I'm still job less i've went to more places than i can shake a stick at everyweek and no body is hiring around here at all... so i went the only other route i knew the military. I am soon to be in PLC 13 and will be headed off to flight school in a 2 years or so.. all iv'e got to do is stick to the plan.

Cliff notes

1. Stick to your plan
2. Sorry this was long

If I had a bachelors I would have with no doubt get a career in working in insurance. My associates that /i got at a 2 year tech school just doesnt seem to hold very much weight..

Look into applying for a career in claims with insurance company as an appraiser/estimator..
Its good money to start (50-55K consistent salary) company car, laptop, great benefits and a very nice schedule... This is actually what I think will be my dream job. Your very lucky to have prof within such a short distance, without a doubt he can help you achieve your goal.. At the point I am now, I wish I had let go of my truck when you did.. Your really not missing out on much besides the headache..

Sorry to hear, I think I remember talking with you a while back about jobs considering I almost became what you were. I'm not to far off conceptually from you due to I work in the tower field (Cellular Side and know all bout you ruff necks). Actually worked with quite a few of the guys who either got laid off or let go and they decided to move to my field cause in some sense its the same life style except we work all the time no 7 on 7 off (I wish). Im kind of at the same point you were in your field too where advancement stops and the work is high money contract BS with me kissing a butt load of azz to make all our clients happy therefore giving us more work. Not including killing myself physically and mentally. Used to like my job before injuries became an issue and the fact that I enjoy off time a little bit more than before:D :D :D :D

But see the difference between me and you is you picked aviation which seems kick butt funn! Additionally there always gonna need pilots to fly round. Me unfortunately, I picked business which up until a few years ago seemed the safe smart route but these days I'm unsure it was the right choice for me do to the dwindling job market in business and kinda my personality differences. Should of just went with what I thought was the wrong plan and been a mechanic eh oh well there's always the future i guess if I cant find a job when I'm done off to mechanic school lol.

From left field: Dam you got a lot of schooling done pretty fast bro, hell I'm 27 and I'm still going, been going since 18 to get my associates then bachelors finally. It stinks when you gotta work full time and then do classes on top of it, god it takes forever!! Wanted to go military at 18 but..... the current future wife and some of my family threatened me with physical harm if I decided to sign up sooooo here I yam!
