Engine break in....Engine dyno vs. just drive it

I just read that article that they were talkin about. It says the first 20 miles you should "run it hard" ....on the throttle, off the throttle...I like this plan....:)

It should be burnin gas NOW! Any guesses on HP before tune and after? 1fast400 was sayin that it wont make as much power because the drop in compression from 10:1 to 8:1, until we crank up the boost. Its got the 8 lb pulley setup in it now, but we have a 15 lb pulley there to be put on that should make about 10lbs with the free flowing heads etc....

before tune in the 600's after tune 8-900hp my guess, the highest powered viper SC'd I've seen was low 900's,
Put the bottle lets make 1000hp:D

Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one, so here's mine.:D

Rings like a varing rpm, and cams/lifters like a constant rpm. Shit.

Personally I would have them break it in for two reasons. Hell, maybe three. First is if it goes tits up, it's there god damn nickel. Second reason. It's broke in. Go have F'ing fun with it. Third. Not sure on this one, but I have known a number of people that have an engine built, install it themselves and screw up the initial startup/break in and the engine builder tells them to pack sand, and in my opinion is justified in doing so.

If you are doing it yourself you need to prime the oil system to have pressure, and be sure that the timing/fuel/etc. is correct so it fires up right away. So many people just grind away on the starter and do all kinds of damage to their new engine.

I will now go away and let you decide.

No matter what, good luck and hope you enjoy your truck.

I think the gorilla is right, Blake for another 1 stack you should let them break it in on the dyno, they will liable if something goes wrong, back in 97 I built a porsche 993 s, it was a N/A flat six that was like around 300hp, I sent it a rebutiable porsche tuner who built it into a 700hp twin turbo system, anyway he broke in the rebuilt motor in his dyno room I was there and like already mentioned he ran it at idle for a while, then different rpm, tach it up and just let it decel on it own, there is no load on the motor and was being monitored all over, then some wot stuff, after that put engine in, put turbos in, tuned and dynoed it, and it was practically ready, Blake for the $ you alredy spent what's another thousand, but then again what do I know:dontknow:

well to start the motor, or to break it in which are we talking about, ?

I still think its nuts to charge somone a grand to break in there motor.

However if they are giving you a truck, that has never fired over, yeah thats a bit dicey, just as Silver said, PRIMMING is a must, and other factors,

But if they are handing over a turn key truck and all you have to do is break the motor in, in my opion its not worth 1k.

I would find it interesting in what the experts say about it , BOOM, JH, DC, Hell even Nowwhat :)

Do what Dan Cragin tells you..........................

And you probably correct about Dan's philosophy.

What I have been told to properly break in the motor from many engine builders and performance folks... was to drive it easily for 100-200 miles, going not above 3000rpm, then 200-500 miles a little harder no above 4500rpm, then in 500-1000 miles, drive it without worrying too much.. nail it if needed, but dont stay in it for long durations.

Then change oil and filter.

Drive another 3000-4000 miles, change oil , buy kit from NAPA to have it analyzed, and see what kind of material you have in the oil.

This is just my opinion, that I have gather from other folks, and it seems to have worked for me quite well, and I have yet to blow up a motor doing it...

Your mileage may vary...=)
