So every time I start up my truck I heard a knock about every 30 or so seconds. Then after about 5 minutes it goes away. Any ideas what it could be?

Is it a KNOCK or a TIC.
Our valve trains are pretty noisy as it is. At start up it may be a lil worse. Or especially after sitting for a while.
If its a knock.....??????
This will sound funny but take a stethescope or a long metal rod and listen to where you think the knock is coming from. Place it on the block at the closest place to narrow it down. That will take alot of guess work out of it.

The noise is not as loud as a knock but its not abanging but it goes away once the truck heats up. Thanks for the advice I will give that a try tomorrow.

How many miles are on the truck, what brand and weight of oil are you using?
The truck has about 36k and I use mobil 1 10-30. I am not sure but it is very cold here in new york and I figured that could have something to do with it. It just makes the noise when I start the car for a few minutes but after that I dont here it.

I would definatly use 0-30 in the cold weather, might help your problem.
I only used 0-40 that what is recomended on the '05's,what oil filter are you running?
This may sound dumb, but did you notice if the same knock is there after you shut it off? I have the same knock, I believe. It's coming from the the right side and it happens about every thirty seconds, or so. It seems to go away, once the engine is fully warmed up. However, when I shut the engine off, it still happens, until it cools off. I had my guys in the shop check it with a stethoscope and it's loudest right at the point where the the midpipes meet the exhaust extensions for the quad cab, only the right side. It scared the shit out of me when I first heard it, thought it was an internal engine noise. But, I don't know any engine noise that will create a knock up to five minutes after the engine is shut off.
I wouldnt say its loud enough that its making me worried and I will probably go and change the oil to the 0-40, i noticed you said its recommended for the 05 i assume its fine for the 04 then. Also my oil filter is the stock black mopar filter.

Mine always snap, crackled and popped at least 10 minutes after shutoff until i installed the Bassani headers now quiet as a mouse.SANTEEN said:
Jack. It's a totally different noise than the usual snap, crackle and pop of the exhaust. It actually sounds like a knock coming from the engine. I'll let you hear it in Panama. I would have never thought it was an exhaust noise, but like I said, it does it with the truck off until it cools down.FATJACK said:

I can hear Santeen now. BUT honey, my truck makes a noise after it is shut off. Now I gotta get headers. Fatjack said so.

haha walbert....my truck also makes noise after shutdown...sometimes a loud "bang" just sounds like metal contracting and what not at a joint or seem

i recently fired up my srt a couple weekends ago after it had been sitting since like october, it was around -10 celsuis (14 f) and it snapped and popped really bad even after the thermostat opened up it was still poppin a bit....have to wait another probably 3 months before the temps are up and the snow is gone before i can drive it again
on a side not somebody in my town daily drives their o5 qc srt in -20 c (-4 f)or worse winter weather, not plugged in or anything, i feel sorry for that thing

your a prime canidate for oil pump by pass valve probs/update
if ya open the hood before ya crank her up, check that ya can reach under the air filter box & get your fingers on the lower engine oil cooler line, upper will work or the oil cooler its self, crank her up & make sure she be makin the noise & see if the line is smooth or followin the noise.
if its feelable probably ya need the oil pump by pass valve & a set of Stinker's life time engine oil cooler lines
