I just went to wash the beast and I have a cap on for the summer, as we are about to head up to the cottage. Well wouldn't you know it, in 5 weeks the cap (only second time I have used it) rubbed right through the paint to bare metal. The wear spot is maybe 2/16-3/18 wide at most and about 5 " long on both sides.

If I bring this to a body shop to get painted, how much should it run?

It really shouldn't cost more than a couple hundred. I got a rock chip on the drivers door I just couldn't live with and had it blended for $150. Mine is the metallic silver and you cannot tell any repair was made. Good luck. It can be fixed.

Had similar damage and I think it was 150 or so, but I invested a little extra cash into some clear bra that I put on the bed, front to back just to make sure it would never happen again. So far after about two years, no further damage

I mean there is absolutely no paint left in these spots
A modern body shop should be able to handle it easily. Respray with a primer, sand, color coat and clear (there's more to it but those are some of the steps). Ask around for a competent body shop and get an estimate. The $150 I quoted was for the complete job.

the 150 was the cost to repaint, I think I spent about 400 bucks all together with the paint, clear and clear bra

Wow you had a clear bra put on your bed! I didn't even notice it. I am about to put a clear bra on the front end. That trip to Utah left a nice gash of a rock chip and to boot I got a crack in the windshield too on the way home.

Seth, when the cap was installed, did they place lengths of high density foam between the cap structure and the bed rails and did they make sure to fully tighten the c-clamps? Around here/us, body shops aren't cheap, expect to pay $60 plus per hour for paint time and around $50ish per hour for repair time. I have used Koons Dodge/Ford body shop in Falls Church and had good results. Several months ago I had the misfortune of my garage door hitting my rear bumper cover as it was closing. Fixing the gouges, prep and paint cost a tad over $440.00 and it took 2 days of shop time. You can probably expect to pay a similar price to repair, repaint and clear coat the bed rails. Becareful of some shops around here -- I wouldn't trust some to paint a bicycle properly.

Clear bra...now I could get into that...or maybe not, but it would be really nice to have around...

When I had a cap on my 96 Ram, I used strips of rubber, 1/4 inch thick and 2 inches wide all the way around where the cap touches the truck bed, this saved the paint from just about all wear.

Bill.

What the heck is a cap? Do you mean tonneau cover? If so I have that same issue. One little spot where the "cap" rubbed right down to the bare metal. So, NOW I am seeing that probably the clamps weren't tight enough? No prob, that could be fixed and will be now that I know what to look for.

Not sure who I pissed off. Seems like every time I head out of town on a road trip the weather turns to crap:(

But my crack and gash should heal up;) :D Should be getting her back today or tommorow. Oh and this makes the second time the cowcatcher had work done to it. Not sure if they did the melty thingy this time or just replaced it. They fixed it under warranty.
