Maine lawyer charged with domestic violence
By The Associated Press
Thursday, August 07, 2008 - Bangor Daily News

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - The chief executive officer of Maine's Iris Network faces criminal charges after flying into a rage over his daughter’s $5,000 cell phone bill.

James Phipps, 50, grabbed his 20-year-old daughter and repeatedly spanked her in a dispute over the cell phone bill and her boyfriend, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department said. There is some dispute over who is responsible for the bill, investigators said.

The Iris Network is a nonprofit organization that helps people who are visually impaired or blind become independent. Phipps, a Portland lawyer, is blind.

Members of the Iris Network’s board say it’s too early to say whether the incident would affect his job there, the Portland Press Herald reported.

Katherine Ray, chairwoman of the board’s personnel committee, said she was reserving comment until the board chairman, Dr. David Stuchiner, has a chance to speak with Phipps about the incident. He has been out of town and was unavailable for comment.

"I don’t see how it impacts the Iris Network until we find out the whole story," said Nancy Hawes. "We’re not planning to do anything right now."

Phipps did not return a telephone call, and his daughter could not be reached.

Investigators say Phipps spanked his daughter repeatedly with his hand as a dispute escalated in his home on Chebeague Island. The daughter then went upstairs to call her boyfriend and another scuffle broke out that involved the daughter taking her father’s cell phone, authorities say.

Phipps was a Cumberland town councilor when Chebeague was part of that town. After the island gained its independence, Phipps was elected to serve on the new town’s transition team.

$5,000.00? She sounds irresponsible at 20 yrs. old. I'm sure the father is paying her bills. I would have whooped that azz too.

Damned dumb thing to do.......

His daughter should'a been living on her own dime by now.....

postpartum abortion candidate:dontknow: Dad shoulda knocked some sense into her. Good for him. :congrats: :congrats: :congrats: :congrats: :congrats: :congrats: :congrats: :congrats: :congrats: :congrats: :congrats: :congrats: :congrats: :congrats:

Technically, he can't touch her. It becomes domestic violence when she turns 18. He shoulda kicked her out or something but you can't claim parent discipling a child when they aren't technically a child anymore.

20 years old or not a 5k cell bill would have got my size 12s so far up her A$$
she would be in an emergency room to get surgery to remove them

If she's still acting like a child, then that's the way she needs to be treated.

That all depends on the situation. If she's under 21, a student and her parents are supporting her and claiming her on their income tax then it should be open season on that backside for something stupid like that. Believe me she'd be better off with an ass whipping than to be kicked out on her ear with irresponsible tendancies and a silly boyfriend that will likely just get her dumb ass pregnant before jumping ship. Then where will she be? Either among the abundance of young single mothers doing what it takes to survive and collecting your tax dollars for WIC or welfare (depending on your geographical locality), OR back at mommy and daddy's house placing more responsibilities on them. If I were her, my vote would be for the ass whipping. :dontknow: It only lasts a couple minutes as opposed to all that other nonsense.

What the hell has happened in this country. It seems that people are remaining children until at least their mid twenties these days. I don't know many 25 year olds that have any sense of responsibility and independence. They sponge off their parents or barely survive with no desire or ability to get on a career path. If our future depends on the twenty somethings of today and the younger generations coming up we're all screwed. There seems to be no work ethic among many under 30 these days.

I have overheard twenty somethings on several occasions talking about how proud they are that they don't have to do crap. They speak about how their goals are to avoid work their whole lives. Unbelievable!

That's why you'll see more and more seniors being hired to do some things. They have the work ethic to at least show up on time and put in an honest days work. I've been through quite a few guys that all they wanted to do was make enough money to put gas in their quad runner or buy the next game for the X-Box. Took no pride in their work or ambition to make their life better.

This is sad. I understand that whatever a person is doing by the time they reach their 30's that's what they will always do. If a twenty something y.o. person is nothing but a hustler, mooching off his/her parents, hanging with friends, getting into trouble and continues that way into their 30's, they will have very slim hope of accomplishing anything significant.

I have a cousin my age (36 and three weeks younger than me) that thought I was stupid for going to college. He openly said that I was wasting my time. But I never once had the opportunities he had. I worked since I was 13 and did everything I could to make my mother proud.

When my cousin was just 13 his father moved to Houston and opened a resturant there with the intention of giving it totally to my cousin. Well instead of accepting it and prospering he acted like a spoiled brat ass growing up. So his father lost hope in him and sold it years later. Now all my cousin does is hustle, spends his mother's (my mother's sister) money, and gets high. His mother owns her own real estate company and is the U.S. counsulate for Guyana (a South American country). What he doesn't do is work but with child support looming over his head because his woman got tired of dealing with a loser and found herself an attorney to marry. So who's paying his $600.00 a month child support? Mommy is. It's hard to believe that he's been a father since '94. But as long as he has his mother's money to carry him (and take care of his son for him) he'll do fine, so he thinks. And what's crazy is both he and his mother dislike me for being the complete opposite. On two occasions they've predicted I will wreck both my SRT's. I think that's what they wish for. And why? Because every car he's owned was given to him by his mother after she was done with it. This is why he will not face me now. I see him maybe once every two or three years although he lives right there in Houston. And he never has anything positive to say about me. :rolleyes:tsk tsk..

Sorry for the rant.. I just hate seeing this sort of behavior.

It turns into a domestic at age 14, but i agree, he would have been locked up if she called the police. I would have kicked her ass out of the house.

Ultimately this is ALL the Dad's fault... He is a failure as a parent......

True, she can act independently regardless of her upbringing. But, with a firm sense of right and wrong and the value of money, it's very rare that someone would blow 5k on a fkn cell phone bill...........

The old man gets an F in parenting...... He reaped what he sowed.

This establishes the fact that you've been successful in teaching them to respect the value of money.... You've made them aware of it by making them earn their own cash..... Unlike the subject on this story.

The Dad fkd up....
