had a cousin die in a crash in PA:
TYRONE - A Blue Knob Volunteer Fire Company captain died after the commercial tanker truck he was driving for work crashed early Saturday morning.
Rex L. Walters, 49, of 1694 Knob Road, Portage, died after the Curry Supply Co. tanker truck loaded with water he was driving through an S-curve, rolled and slid through an intersection at state Route 453 and Greendale Drive in Snyder Township at 5:30 a.m., Hollidaysburg state police said.
The truck then hit a curb and a utility pole at a corner of the intersection and rolled several times before the cab and the tanker separated. The cab came to a rest on its roof near the Fetter Funeral Home.
Blair County Deputy Coroner Jeff Guyer pronounced Walters dead at the scene.
Don Bowser, former Blue Knob Volunteer Fire Company treasurer, said he got to know Walters because they were also neighbors.
"He was always willing to help anyone who needed help, and he was an outstanding citizen, and he was liked by everybody in the community," Bowser said.
Bowser said Walters had two sons and two brothers in the company. Five other Walters were listed under personnel on a website associated with the fire company, including his brother Chief Lance Walters.
"He was a great family man," Bowser said. "He'll be surely missed by all in the community."
Bowser said Walters was responsible for getting the fire hall and the kitchen painted.
"Our prayers go out to his family," he said.
Tyrone Hookies Fire Company Chief J.R. Watson said he was saddened at the loss, and the Walters family is an instrumental part of the Blue Knob company.
He said he had attended trainings with Walters and remembered him as likeable and jovial.
The crash cut power to 130 Penelec customers and some Verizon and Comcast customers, Watson said. State Route 453 was closed for several hours after the crash.
Tyrone Hookies Fire Company and fire police responded to the scene.
The crash is still under investigation, police said.
