For the last few years we've had raccoon mom's show up with their little ones on our back patio. It's safe, and usually has fresh water along with some treats (peanuts, dog treats, left-overs, etc.).

We call the little ones "grapefruits" because they're approximately that size....with fur. :)

Here are some pics of the first 'fleet' to show up this year. I just took the pics a few minutes ago:

(1) mom and (6) babies.

Enjoy!

NOTE: All the patio furniture/BBQ is moved as I put down vegetation killer on the patio stones earlier in the day.

Ya gotta love the little bastards..... The ones we had in Colorado could be ... well..... "feisty" is a good word...... "nasty" is another....

Racoons are adorable creatures to look at. And I wouldn't hurt one for the world... But, these cute little creatures will take your bloody hand off if the mood strikes 'em.....

Great piks.......fun stuff.....Thanks, Kev.

I'm with ya, Tim.
We DO NOT let them in the house, and certainly don't let them get close enough to bite or scratch us.

The mom pictured is one of the friendly ones.
She knows that I am the "big bi-pedal animal that brings good food to the magic opening". :D

that was my question....are they cool to have around or are they a nusance?..heard different things...they are cool looking.

Had a friend that ended up having to put up an electric fence to keep them out of his place.

He was late to work one morning because the damn things wouldn't let him out of his house. :D

We have one hanging around our place now. My wife feeds everything that comes around, birds, squirrels, etc.. Hell, she'd feed Stinker and think he was cute.;) :D

Didn't put up a fence, but we had a mother that would bring her "grapefruits" around every year and live under the eaves of my roof! They made a LOT of noise and started tearing up the shingles. So, I had to put up some plywood to close it off. Looks kinda funny, but it keeps them out.
Shame too, because I agree, they are very cute l'il bastahds!!

Nice pics Kev!! That one looks like he is about to lick the lens!! I thought you didn't let them get that close!!

Dang Mike! Killed our brethren! :D I've always wanted a mounted Rattlesnake.

Cool pics Kevan! I'm with Scott, how'd you get so close? Very cool though. Thanks fo sharing.

My reflexes are up there with Steven Segal (pre-beer belly), so I'm not too worried about bites or scratches. Plus, I don't piss them off. :)

Rachel, however, is not allowed as close. We have pet the 'grapefruits' before as they sit on their butts and eat peanuts. But some mom's aren't into that and usually give a warning growl. That's enough for me! LOL

You can really see personalities if you watch them for a few minutes. There are shy/timid ones, curious ones, really paranoid ones, then the bold ones like the guy who got up in the camera lens. I'm pretty sure he thought the shiny silvery thing (camera) was food.

Another hysterical part is when the babies "hide" from other raccoons. They climb the juniper trees you can see in the back. They aren't quiet (they make little squeaking noises) and won't sit still- the whole top of the tree 'waves' when they're in it. Not exactly stealth. :D

You do realize that this is making Stinker salivate. Hell, he's probably got the Hillbilly Cookbook out looking for recipies right now.:p :D

Coons really make good pets too. I've known a few folks that have had them. Just got to keep your eye on all your shiny stuff, cause it will all end up in their hiding spot hehehe.
