The time had come to retire the old Pirelli's to that great big tire...ummm....I ditched the Pirelli's. :)

With the VAST selection of available tires for our trucks, choosing a new one took me a while:
"Let's see....$400. ea. for the BFG's. Ummm-no. Not getting the Pirelli's again. Welp, that was easy."

I went with the Hankook Ventus ST RH06's.
The only downside to these is that they are only V-rated (149mph).
My local DiscountTire price-matched the place I had found online. It saved me shipping costs, which came out to about (1) tire.
Total cost: about $950 for all 4 tires, which included installation, balancing, and all the fees.

The guys at DTC were great and didn't once scowl or poke me as I hovered over them while the tire change took place. When they asked for the keys and I said "I'm the only one who drives it", they were cool about that and just guided me onto the ramp. Rubber blocks used on the lift to protect the frame. They understood, without me even saying a word. :)

They were very careful with the rims when taking off the old and putting on the new, and when road force balancing. Dave (the tech) even re-mounted one of the tires to get it matched.
Props to Dave and the other guys at that shop. Very nice and very understanding.

Of course, before I left....the hood was popped. That's everyone's favorite part. :D

We've got a couple of guys on here running the Toyo Proxes, so I'll be a tester for the Hankooks.
On the ride home (about 5 miles), they felt nice. I'll be able to feel more once I'm able to open it up and get some miles on it.

Some pics for everyone:

Nice new sneakers... I like them. Gonna go for them I think as well when I need new. Let us know how they ride.

No DIY on this Kev...:p :D

I love the look of the BFG's, eventually Ill get those.

I still have my OEM's with plenty of thread left.

Believe me, if I had $150K in tire changing gear and a lift, there'd be a DIY article.
:D

I left some tread in the Bronx on Sunday. I still have plenty left but more of those GTG's and I will be on tirerack soon.

nice lookin tires!

i wouldnt worry about the speed rating thats 149 for a bout 4 hours, dont know if we can fine a road long enough to do that.

Do they offer tire siping?

I've heard nothing but good results from having this done, including longer wear and better grip.

WTF IS TIRE SIPING:dontknow: TIRES LOOK GREAT.PRICE IS EVEN BETTER!
LET US KNOW HOW THEY WORK OUT:rock:

Speed rating and tire siping

I am in sales at The Tire Rack and know a good bit about tires. Never sipe your tires. Why would you let some novice cut into your tires. Tires are engineered over long hours and tested relentlessly. Cutting into the tread/siping will obnly hurt poerformance. There will be a loss in stability and steering responsiveness. The only time it would help is in snow...and most don't drive these trucks in the snow...plus they make snow tires. Also, the lower the speed rating the less responsive the tire and the less stiff the sidewall...it is not just about the 149 speed saftey issue. I would never recommend going with a V rated tire.

Unfortunately, the majority of available tires for these trucks are V-rated.
Of the 26 on the market in this size, only 4 are W-rated (BFG, Pirelli, Yokohama & Continental). And the treadwear ratings are all 320 or lower.

Would you trust a W-rated tire for $154, or a V-rated tire at $158?

For my type of driving, the V-rated will work just fine.

(You can call me "Caveman"....because I did a little research. :) )

Has anyone used N2O instead of air in their tires? I used to use it while I was in Japan and it worked great. It doesn't expand or contract in the varying temperatures. Anyone know any tire shops that use it?
