Fuel Cells....do I need one?

I was thinking about a fuel cell for my truck....since we now have 3/4 line coming out of the fuel tank to the fuel pump.... if the fuel gets down to say 1/4 of a tank and I am stopped on a hill the truck will quit running.....basically runs out of gas for a short time till the fuel can pick back up.

So If I install a fuel cell.....do away with the existing fuel tank and place the fuel cell behind the cab in the bed of the truck...say a 22-30 gal Cell so I can have some range.....maybe this problem will be fixed.

Your thoughts?

i would just have a header tank built, maybe 2 or 3 gallon max just to keep the motor from starving
 
Change your fuel systems pickup to a bulkhead fitting on the bottom of the fuel tank....see my pics on the "pics of blakes truck thread."

He did that here is my pic of the pickup...only happens when I get to 1/4 then I have to really watch it.

Walt....I wouldn't drive around with a big ass fuel cell in the bed were it hasn't been crash tested...F that.....

I don't understand why you can't run her empty if the pick up is in the right place....:dontknow:
 
Its real simple Walt, if it gets to a 1/4 tank , put more in, the fuel cell deal like Nowwhat is dangerous unless it is engineered for impact.

I always thought Fuel Cells were safer than a standard fuel tanks..:dontknow: since they are installed in race cars....You can see where JH punched the hole in the existing tank from the pictures....not sure if there is a better location.....That is why I thought a fuel cell would fix my problem and would be safer than a the current set-up......really don't know.

Maybe Jack can give his spin on this?

I real doubt that a race cell is going to be any less dangerous than a compromised stock plastic tank with a hole drilled in the bottom of it.
 
Holy F'ing Shit. That is one of the most dangerous things I have seen in a long time. You could hit a dog, and if he went under the truck it could rip that fitting out of that plastic tank and there would be no way in hell to stop the flow of fuel. Personally I would not drive it across the street to park it. Hell, that installation makes the old exploding Pintos look safe.

Yes, properly installed fuel cells are safe for the street, and I would get one in there as soon as you can.

K-man check out the pro street cells, they have the safety aviation foam. you could either mount it in the bed and tie it into the stock tank or mount it in the bed alone.

but remember the plumbing will have to change, plus the fuel sending unit fo the guage.

Hope this helps, there are other companies but Jegs or Summitt can get it to John in about 3 days MAX!

Don't know if a fuel cell is necessary but the layout of what you have is not good. I agree with one members previous post' Wrong location if there is not a pickup tube atached that runs to the back of the tank. If there is not do not run the truck hard with anything less than 3/4 full as fuel starvation could occur resulting in severe engine damage. There may be more inside that we do not see but from your problems I doubt it.
 
I have 2 pumps......a Walbro 255 in tank and an Aeromotive Eliminator A1000 in the buljhead fitting....this is what was recommended by Aeromotive. With a diagram sent by them.....i dunno guys.....I trust Aeromotive though. But then again I trust everybody.....thats why my shit is Kaboom!
