I am looking for AFFORDABLE garage floor options. I would LOVE to do a Race Deck type flooring but it's just not pheaseable for me. My garage is over 1000 sq ft and I am NOT spending 4K to floor it.

I found some tiles at Sams Club that look ok and would run me about 2k but their color options are limited. Pretty much grey only. :dontknow:

I have thought about UCoatIt epoxy system or painting it but I am afraid any type of paint is going to peel up. My father in law did his garage floor with the Home Depot epoxy kit and it peeled up and looks like crap after just a couple of months. Now he has a mess to deal with to get it all cleaned up.:(

I am thinking real hard about using a concrete stain and just a good clear sealer over that. That would be the most cost effective and pretty easy to do. Any other floor covering options out there that I am missing? :dontknow:

I just put a covering on mine that I got from Sam's club, $327 shipped.

But my floor is 10X20! :dontknow:

I like the white and black squares, but over a 1000 ft floor that would get pricey quick!! Somebody else has that I saw the other day in a pic. Looks real nice.

But, like you said, stain and a good sealant would be cheap, and usually looks really good! I think if it is stained right, you actually don't have to seal it....:dontknow:

.02$

you can use a concrete stain...you need to use muratic acid on it first to etch it, then you roll the stain like a paint...if you etch it first your stain penetrates and you should be fine...you need to 2 coat the stain...another option, which is a little bit more, is to use slate tiles...they are non slip, you can usually find them on sale at either home depot or lowes for less than $1 a sq ft...they look really nice, the down side is if your truck/car leaks any fluid they stain rather easily...another option is the interlocking tiles, i dont know alot about them, but seen them on TV...looks like they are made of rubber or plastic, trims with a knife, and you can replace 1 or 2 if needed later down the road...and the last is contact a swimming pool contractor in your area, they use a thin concrete that goes over the entire area and comes in a bunch of colors and they can also apply it in a design, the upside is it is non slip, dont know if it stains or not....hope that helps

we use the epoxy paint on our shop and have semi trucks and trailers on it. if you use the acid on it and paint it on a hot day it will stick and last. we are very rough on our floor and only and to paint it about every two years but your talking about changing tires and oil changes welding and torch splatter getting on it. i can get the type we use if you want me to. weve been using this for about 6 years. ask stinker what it looks like. or ill try to get a pic on my cell phone later andpost it up

Dayum, best idea yet!

Thanks everyone for the tips. I'll def etch it first. Shouldn't be too hard to prep cause it was never sealed. ;)

I like the stain and sealer idea. I tried floor coatings, and they never turned out as I had hoped they would.

The epoxy stuff has to be prepped or forget it. Like they said use the muratic acid......slack prep equals slack results. I have had mine in for 6 months or so now with no issues. Looks as good as day one.

My FIL's was prepped with Muratic acid, scrubbed down hard. Still didn't adhere and is peeling up horribly. :dontknow:

I just finished my epoxy coating (about 1300 square feet worth!). I prepped the living shit out of it. Every section was acid etched and rinsed 3-4 times, then done all over again. I knew it would pay off, so I just kept at it. Patrick's right. The prep is everything. I spent beaucoup time scraping, scrubbing, spot cleaning with 3M adhesive remover (latex paint overspray), before I began the etching process. It took seven kits, but it looks bitchin'.

I have found two small spots on the foundation stem wall (part that sticks up above the slab) that didn't get rinsed well enough, and sure as shit, peeled like a proverbial leper. Those etching solutions that came with the kits contain salts that will crystalize and prevent the epoxy from bonding to the concrete, if not completely rinsed away.

Good luck!

we used a steam jenny to clean ours out before and after the acid then make sure its completely dry water wont let it stick either, its a pain but 100 degree summer days takes care of a lot of the moisture down here. we only do it in july and august

Just spoke with Race Deck...their advertised price per sq ft is about $4.50...but when I told them I have a 2530 ft garage their price dropped to 2.69 a sq. ft.

Anyone else interested in RaceDeck?

Maybe we can drive the sq. ft. expense even lower...

Hell yes!! I need 1010 sq ft. If their price gets low enough I'll buy their stuff.

Anyone else?
