The DOJ will surely be handed this case,an if that proves true, they don't seem to be in the mood for approving such a merger these days. One more thing an election year screws up.
The truly sad parts is if they don't allow a merger, and if the merger could actually shore up both carmakers balance sheets, then who will be allowed to invest in either company?? If they must remain seperate, then what will either company be worth? Not much, I would bet.
Foreign investment would then be the only choice. Hyandai-Chrysler anyone?

And don't forget that they would no longer need 2 sets of engineering, design, testing personnel, ect...
