Dodge rumble returns

Muscle car fans, a classic ride silenced since 1974 will roar back to life this weekend.

Chrysler Group is preparing to announce before the Pepsi 400 NASCAR race in Daytona Beach, Fla., on Saturday that it will build the Dodge Challenger, bringing to market as soon as next year a sports coupe to compete against the Ford Mustang.

Chrysler officials haven't announced details, but people familiar with the plans confirmed that the two-door, four-seat concept Challenger unveiled in January at the North American International Auto Show will go into production.

Chrysler built the Challenger for only a few years, 1970-74, but the car made a lasting impression.

The concept version's styling borrowed heavily from the classic 1970 Challenger muscle car, with twin hood scoops and a pistol-grip shifter. The concept is powered by a 6.1-liter Hemi V8 producing 425 horsepower through a six-speed manual transmission.

"Every NASCAR fan in the country will be drooling over that car," said Erich Merkle, an auto analyst with IRN Inc. in Grand Rapids.

Damn.... and I just told the spousal unit that I would consider trading my truck in on one if they came out...:burnout:

Hmmmm, I wonder just how close to the concept the car will be?:dontknow:

Is this only going to have an SRT package and RT package only?

Still great news from DC, finally some competition for Ford.

Awesome - I see a new car in my future!

But this means it will be time to retire my chick-magnet Sundance. :(

Im sure there will be a SRT version

All I am saying... is that it better have the option for a Manual trans... if it doesn't.... don't even build the thing...

I bet my dad is gonna be stoked he held back on getting an srt10, he wanted that car since he heard about the concept...

SHeeesh Mike...even heads/cam/exhaust on a Hemi is serious business, but you're already talkin about a S/C & Meth? You're my hero:D ...but leave the cosmetics to a set of Slicks and skinnies on Bogart wheels and a parachute:D

Does the prototype have a manual, or automatic?

Seems I read some test drive of the prototype where the writer said something about leaving the car in first gear because the prototype had no working emergency brake.

I don't know about what you read... But the concept I checked out at the Auto Show in NY had an auto, and the speaker said it would only come in auto... If that's going to be true, then they shouldn't make it...

It will be one of the most anticipated cars to come out in a long time. It's gonna be sweet!

Yes, it is absolutely a manual trans in the concept, no ifs, and or buts. The guy unveiling it in Vegas kept saying over and over again, "Did I mention it's a manual 6 speed?" When they started it up the guy even ground the gears a little trying to put it in neutral. However, there are no guarantees with the production model except that the response was overwhelmingly in favor of the manual trans.

I'm hoping the 6.1 is the R/T engine and they have something even nastier for the SRT version.
