Strong pre-orders reported for Challenger SRT8
Though it’s still months to the official unveiling at the Chicago Auto Show, interest in the new limited-edition Challenger SRT8, with its 6.1-liter HEMI, carbon-fibre hood stripes and numbered dash plaque, is running high. On the first day of orders, 4,300 people placed deposits on the new 2008 Challenger SRT8. As of today, more than 6,000 deposits have been received.

“This is unprecedented,” according to Mark Mallie, Challenger Brand Manager. “Customers were actually coming to us and pushing us, so we thought this was a good time to take pre-sale orders.”

Since pricing was announced on November 29, traffic to the Dodge website has increased 23 percent.

same thing a salesmanager told me today. i hope im able to secure mine. i was one of them that put a deposit down.

Dodge may build up to 10,000 Challengers next year

According to Inside Line, Dodge claims it doesn't know where websites and blogs got the idea that it would only build 5,000 Challengers in 2008, the car's first year of production. We can tell you. Automotive News reported it back in late October, and then it was reported by Inside Line. Despite the confusion, the cross-hair brand claims the final production number for 2008 is not set in stone. That's probably because initial demand for its modern muscle car is high, with 6,600 preorders recorded in just three days. Now Dodge is saying it could build and sell up to but not more than 10,000 Challengers in 2008, though only a Limited Edition version of the SRT8 model with the five-speed automatic will be offered. After that, Dodge will add the other Challenger models available with the 5.7L HEMI and 3.5L V6. Production will eventually reach beyond 30,000 units per year. Hopefully for Dodge this initial high demand for the Challenger won't fall too much by the time it begins pumping them out en masse.

talked with the dealer yesterday and he told me the status has changed twice on mine and my pops cars. should be hitting the assembly line shortly.

2008 model-year Dodge Challenger production has been bumped up to 10,000 cars for the U.S. and Canada, with at least 9,000 sold as of January 3. We have confirmation on the change of the instrument panel surround to silver. Also interesting are the front seat belt mounts, which are normally bolted to the bottom of the B post, then travel up the B post at which point you grab it and place over your chest. In the Challenger, seat belts are set up convertible-style; there is a small bar at the bottom of the B post which the seat belt is attached to. This allows it to slide back and forth to help with getting it out of the way when getting in the back. Then the seat belt travels through a loop at the top of the seats like in a convertible. You grab the seat belt from the top of the seat and then place across you chest. This may indicate that someone is thinking ahead to making a convertible. (Courtesy oh20; first released at allpar).
...how much do Challengers really cost? Here’s a hint (well, a dealer invoice). Dealer markup seems pretty reasonable. Oh, and by the way — next year, more than 460 horsepower might be showing up!
