My Mom was just diagnosed with it. I'd be interested in hearing about anything that helps too, so I can pass it on to her.

I do know that her doc pretty much told her to give up any food that tastes good.

Friend of mine in AZ uses Grape seed extract pills and says they work for him along with diet.

When he gets a flare up he starts taking the pills and gets relief in a few days.

He does say the pain is excruciating.

OK, send any questions my way. I have suffered with gout since I was 19. It is an unbearable pain.
Believe this, I learned how to keep it minimized and do NOT take any prescription meds...I have handled it on my own for almost 3 years.

First off, drink only bottled or well water (bottled to be safe). City water contains chlorine which kills your natural biotics = bad.
2nd drink lots of water especially when your under attack. I usually drink about 10-12 bottles/day when I'm under attack and about 6 normally.
Don't drink anything other than water if you are having an actual attack. Do not eat meat while under attack.
I'll update later with a list of good and bad foods. Here are a few to get you started.

Good...celery, fresh lemons, just about any fresh fruit

Correction............SORRY

I just talked to my friend and I was wrong on the grape seed extract.

It should be Cherry seed extract.

He said to start out by taking 12 pills a day and when you were getting better taper back to about 2-4 per day.

These can be purchased at health food stores and similar places

Here is some information from goutcure.com

This is the exact same information I follow. You can use the cleansing diet (it sucks) to quickly recover from a gout attack. For me, this cleansing diet will bring me out of a bad attack faster than allopurinol or colchisine (may have mispelled) but if you have used colchisine you will remember the horrid diarrhea...

In order to stop a current gout attack and to prevent future gout attacks, it is necessary to slow the creation of uric acid and to remove stored uric acid from the infected joint as well as in the connective tissue inside the entire body.

To accomplish this we need to STOP all of the foods that are high producers of uric acid and those that interfere with the removal of uric acid from the system by the kidneys. We also need to consume foods that are going to allow the kidneys to remove as much uric acid from the blood supply as possible every 24 hours. The higher the pH of the urine, the more uric acid is disposed of by the kidneys. Since we are going to be overloading the blood by dissolving the crystallized acid in the joints and connective tissue, you can see why these guidelines are necessary. We are not simply stopping the infection (gout attack) we are removing a portion of the stored uric acid from the system completely.

During the first 5-7 d ays on GC it is HIGHLY recommended to follow a strict purine free diet to allow the Gout Care herbs to solely focus on expelling the stored uric acid from the liver, fat, tissue, and joints. As GC begins to dissolve years of storage and begin repairing the damaged areas, avoiding further new uric acid production for a short period of time is extremely important. The blood can only hold so much soluble acid and the first week should consist solely of old storage to be carried from the blood to the urine and bowels for expelling. How and which foods are reintroduced back into the diet are just as important, so after the first week on GC and the cleansing diet please contact [email protected] , for a specific food reintroduction plan followed by a maintenance plan as well to keep you gout free for good.

The foods below are the ONLY foods recommended to eat during the initial cleansing to get rid of any uric acid build up. Even if you are not under an attack, there are still deposits of uric acid all over the body posing a constant threat. It is strongly suggested to expel all the years of build up with this strict diet, herbal blend, and water intake so that you may easily return to a more normal diet with a guaranteed success to stay gout free for good!

Garden Fruits and Vegetables (fresh or frozen) : Carrots, Celery, Boiled or Steamed Cabbage (limit to avoid bloat), Zucchini and Summer Squash, Baked Sweet Potato (fresh not canned), Corn on the Cob, Cucumbers, Iceberg Lettuce, Cantaloupe, Onions, Parsley, Tomatoes (NO sauce and limit- not a staple food), Watermelon, Sweet Peppers, Fresh Chili Peppers, and Potatoes with skin preferably. Avoid the type labeled "White Potato" but all other baking potatoes like Russets are fine to eat. Red potatoes are higher in sugar but can at least be used in the soup recipe below as the texture holds up better over longer cooking times. Avoid cauliflower and all dark leafy green veggies for this time period because of high iron content and purines.

Tree Fruits and Berries (fresh or frozen): Apples, Avocado, RIPE Bananas, Fresh Coconut, Cherries, Currants, Gooseberries, Dates, Raisins, Fresh Fig, Kiwi, Grapefruit, Mango, Papaya, Seedless Grapes, Lemon (Internal use for alkaline and healing power as well as outside on the skin for anti-inflammatory relief), Lime, Oranges, Pears, Pineapples, Blueberries, Raspberries, and Strawberries. Avoid cranberries, apricots, and all dried fruits because of acidity and purines.

Grains: Brown rice and Fresh or Frozen Corn

Protein: Raw almonds, chestnuts, and walnuts (nothing cooked in oil) - This is a very important daily purine free protein source during cleansing, but should always be eaten with BROWN RICE. Brown rice helps to absorb the iron content in the nuts. A combination of brown rice, almonds, and corn provide the same essential protein and amino acids as a piece of meat would but without the purines.

Dairy: Sour dairy- Yogurt (Plain with your own fresh fruit added at least during the cleansing phase, commercially fruited are acidic in nature and full of sugar), 2% Cottage Cheese and Sour Cream. These three sour dairy products, plain yogurt especially, are very alkaline and healing adding essential friendly bacteria to the body boosting digestion and immune system power.

Sweetener: Fresh Un-Pasteurized Bee Honey and Stevia

Flavorings: Fresh Squeezed Lemon Juice, Real Butter Only, Small Amounts of Soy Sauce, Fresh Grinded Flax Seed (great to put in cottage cheese), Pure Coconut oil (the only oil safe when heated in the body or by cooking)

Spices/Seasoning: Garlic, Ginger, Turmeric, Cumin, Chicory, Cilantro, Fennel, Chili Pepper, Cayenne, Tamari, Celery Seed, Parsley, Cinnamon, Sea Salt (NO table salt and should considering replacing it for good!!)

Beverages: Mainly should of course be Non-Chlorinated Water, but a small 4-6oz glass of Unsweetened Fruit Juice or Milk (Skim Only during cleansing) will do for a change.

It would be best to use a lot of sour cream on your baking potatoes. If you are under an attack you must eat a FULL variety of these foods. For instance brown rice, fresh almonds/chestnuts/walnuts, and corn provide all the protein and amino acids of a piece of meat when eaten as a meal, without any purines. This variety and protein match up is necessary because a sudden lack of protein/fat sources and not enough calories per day can cause the body to release protein from stored fat. This release will also produce more uric acid which we want to avoid during this cleanse. Eating the fresh raw almonds/chestnuts is important for good protein and fat sources but be sure to eat them with some brown rice. This is very important so the brown rice can block the absorption of the iron content in the nuts. Iron will aggrevate an attack which is also why bottled/filtered water is suggested over tap water. Your first goal is to stop eating any and all acidic foods that can be aggravating to your current attack and uric acid build up. All of the foods above are alkaline and will stop all further production of uric acid. THIS STRICT DIET IS TEMPORARY! Also most fresh spices for flavoring are fine EXCEPT for pepper, more than a tad of various salts, and peppercorn.

Further important notes:

**A deficiency of B5 produces excessive amounts of uric acid. A diet low in vitamin E can cause harm to cells that produce uric acid, further causing them to produce more. Fried foods destroy vitamin E in the body and few people have sufficient amounts of B5 as is, therefore it is highly recommended that you take at least 400iu of E, 10,000 iu of Beta Carotene , and 500mg of B5 (Pantothenic Acid) divided into two doses. (If you are using or purchased our Body Boost Multivitamin then you are covered on these suggestions as the vitamin holds all the necessities and then some.)

**Do not use a B complex or vitamins containing B3 (niacin) or iron, they will increase uric acid production during an attack. Multivitamins can be found iron free and made with Niacinimide as opposed to Niacin which does not have the same negative aggravating effect**

**Start drinking a lot of bottled or filtered water right away. Best rule of thumb is each individual should drink 1/2 ounce of water per pound of the body weight daily....ie if you weigh 200lbs then 100oz daily is needed. Water should always be taken in SLOW AND STEADY throughout the day upon waking and until bed at a pace of 3-5oz per half hour for optimal liver and kidney clearance. This pace keeps you from bloating, makes it easier to take in large amounts throughout the day, and provides a pace in which uric acid clearance is around the clock working for you and towards your goals. If you are not urinating often with large amounts of water and taking the GC then contact us please!! You need to always provide the body with an exit to flush the toxins and uric acid out.

**If you are under an attack it would also be best to wrap an ace bandage around an ice pack and apply to the inflamed area(s). The cold will stop the pain and make your body push the uric acid out of the tissue. Follow by warm heating pad will increase blood to the area helping to remove the uric acid that has been pushed from the tissue. This increase in blood flow will aid the herbs in dissolving the uric acid crystals. Once the swelling and inflammation has gone down, you can still alternate the ice pack with a heating pad, even through the night if possible to continue removing uric acid from the area.*

Thanks for that info kennygene. Just sent it over to my Mom.
No problem, let me know if you have any questions.

I was so happy to have some control over the agony, I really didn't care what I had to eat just as long as the pain would go away.

thanks kenny, great info. i get in it my ankle and both big toes. i really try to watch what i eat, but the monent a flare up happens i start poppin moltrin, and this seems to help most of the time. never know where you are and the food availble. i am going to try that idea of cleaning the system. how long shouls a person do it?

I done the cleansing diet a full 5 days the first time. After that, I usually just do 4 days if I feel it coming on. The first cleansing killed the pain within 3 days. It was really awesome!
Day-to-day for me is meat, beer, etc. You have to be careful and make sure to eat lots or even more fresh fruits than others. Sometimes, I'll eat an entire bundle of celery at night and drink a bottle of water before I go to bed just as a precaution.
Be careful to not loose any weight if you are under attach. Your body fat is loadedd with proteins!!!! So, do the cleanse but eat enough to maintain body weight (eat almost constantly). Also, if you're on blood pressure medication, watch it closely while on the cleansing diet. I actually had to stop taking my BP medication until I went off the diet. My BP dropped and I felt like crap.
As soon as I ate meat again, it went back up and I had to resume meds.

I used to take Zyloprim on a regular basis. After I lost about 30 lbs. and stopped drinking almost all together, I went off it and just try and maintain my diet.

When and If I have a flare up, I drink lots of water (bottled only), and do rice / corn / nuts for a few days and usually it goes away pretty quickly. I bought a warm foot bath massager that sometimes help my feet feel a little better from Walgreens. I played a lot of sports when younger and became a big believer in salts for soothing pain.

thank you for all your comments and suggestion FINALLY i have some relief - unfortunately i had to call the doctor because of the pain i was in, both feet and ankles - more pain then i could stand....

i have been on allopurinol - indomethacin - colchicine, and now they have me on prednisone,...

the prednisone and colchicine seemed to work the best coruse of treatment that i have experanced in the past 3 years 12hrs and i had relief the pain is not totaly gone, but i can stand it

i need to have a follow up test to my follow up test with regurds to my kidneys and gout and the other kidney problms i have as well - kidneys not filtering calcium as well as uric acid and the amout of UA in my blood stream and kidney's are 4x the amout they sould be

i have been in and out of the hospital and in and out of doctors office and test after test for about a mth or so now, what i am told is that the frequent attacks " Gout " is starting to take a toll on my kidneys. so there are more test and more studies to be completed

thank you all for your input - comments and responces

Chris

Gout is just a painful affliction...it is the worst pain I have ever faced. Sometimes a little help from a doctor is the only way to go.

Eat an apple before you go to bed every evening....

It cures alott'a ills...many to which I can attest....

Feel better.... Gout sucks, I know.....

My old friend gout is back. I have been fighting it for 2 weeks and finally broke down and got some allopurinol. I have been on it 3 days and still limping but at least I'm walking.
My diet plan worked without meds for over 5 yrs.
