well after sitting here reading page after page ,it seems that there are grant for a biz start up BUT ,,It seems i am the wrong color ,,,looks as though there is funding for ever group out there unless you are a white male

Yea pretty much... :(

You may try your local Small Business Administration. They tend to have the best info to get started and doing business with other locals. They try to "Keep it in the family" (locally) so to speak...

Many guys will start a business in their wife's name to try and take advantage of the minority loopholes.

True... You could have some luck there. And, if you are planning on having walk-in business, it's a great networking resource too. :)

You're not going to get anything out of the Fed... you are the wrong color and gender.

And Jake, just who do you think the SBA is?

Could it be that the SBA and the Fed are the same?

Please people, I know that many of you like to denigrate our government and that is fine, it is everyone's right to bitch...but where is the best source of help when you really need something? In this case, or in the case of a flood or hurricane or a war or an economic crisis or a pandemic or when you are discriminated against, and any of a thousand other problems...it is the Fed that has a program to help.

......

I was referring to LOCAL Small Business Associations, not the "SBA" (US Small Business Administration).

Quote from the SBA website ( http://www.sba.gov/services/financialassistance/grants/index.html )

"Please Note that the U.S. Small Business Administration does not offer grants to start or expand small businesses, though it does offer a wide variety of loan programs. While the SBA does offer some grant programs, these are generally designed to expand and enhance organizations that provide small business management, technical, or financial assistance. These grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments."

.... EDIT: I see now that Da1Chief specifically said local "Small Business Administration". I thought he said Association. Apologies if I caused confusion.

Hell it is hard to get a meal if you are a white male, sorry Roy , but have been down that long road several times (even as a biz owner) and in that arena the white male is pretty much on their own unfortunately.:argh:

Fredo, go for it, but you would probably make More money going with
El Pollo Loco.....http://www.elpolloloco.com/

Just kidding:D :D :D

Am I missing something about the US SBA, Roy? :dontknow: .... The only thing I could find were loans (not grants), and most were restrictive to minorities, or existing businesses. There were some programs for non-profit stuff as well. Their website is like a damn labyrinth, and bounces you around all over the place.

I'm not sure if it's that... it's just hard to navigate. :dontknow:  They bury links to different parts of the site in the middle of other pages and shit like that. :argh: Go on there and look... you'll see what I mean. :banghead:

When I started my business I considered putting it in my wife's name in order to take advantage of minority taxes and loans. I decided that I would probably be better off keeping them out of it and doing it all on my own. Hell....they're involved more in my business than I want them to be as it is. Do you know I have to send my local Government $200 a year just to tell them I'm still in business? You'd think that the fact that I'm still send them state sales tax would give them a clue.

The SBA does have a few grants available but very few...they really don't even loan money. They do under the right situations guarantee the loan with a lending institution. So the lender remains the same, but the criteria for the loan are different and there are underpinnings that are provided by the SBA to make the loan more palatable to the financial institution.

Most state governments fund an organization that brings angels and new business start-ups together. These are what are called business incubators. They teach people who are starting businesses how to develop business plans, financial models, financial projections and how to make pitches to investors. Once the ground work is done, the entrepreneur is presented to a group of investors that are interested in new businesses in the SIC code that the entrepreneur is creating. Often these investors can get involved from a minimal start up stake to full funding for years depending on their interest.

The investors will require ridged plans and financial projections to protect their investments. Each time a milestone is missed the penalty can be as sever as loss of funding to possibly forfeiture of a percentage of the business. But for those who have good ideas, are willing to do the upfront work and are willing to offer up profits in return for funding...the incubators are wonderful sources of funds to get going. Almost every state has one of these organizations.
