I am trtin to put a Black honeycomb grill in the place of my stock one. I started popping off some of the fasteners that hold the two black platic peices in and ended up snapping most of them. Are they really necessary or just wastes of space. I have the new fasteners as well for the grill. Is it necessary to remove the entire shell or can I just pop out the inserts and slide the new one in.

Thanks
Tony

PM BigBlkQC he has done the swap...

I found it was easiest to remove the entire grill and get it on a table. Put a couple towels down so nothing gets scratched up. Then you can punch the center of the rivets out. I was able to reuse all of mine. There is a big one that attach's the black air shroud to the back of the grill. The honeycomb grill does not have a hole for it. I left it off. If it proves to be a problem then I'll fix it.

was thinking about brilling them and and using new rivets, think this will work? been looking at it and trying to decide how to best go about it the plastic rivets holding the chrome grill on are ones ive never seen before, may have to get my friend that owns a body shop to help me before i tear something up beyond repair

You will have to use new rivets, there's no way to get those off and reuse them, unless you're a btter man than I am (SilverSRT must be...LOL!!!). Like he said, take the whole grill shell off and lay it down on something (table, cabinet top, etc) that has some towels or blanket on it, it's a lot easier that way.

anyone looking for a honeycomb grill? my neighbor took his off and did a billet grill, and was going to throw them away. they probably need to be painted cause they look a little faded, but they are free (just pay to ship them) PM me if interested

You should definitely get them, someon will need them. I got mine for $7 on eBay, painted them with flat black spray paint, and they look new after a year, so faded is OK...

cool deal, gonna try and install mine this week, got a 06 srt badge from dragon that im gonna put on with it.

I was able to re-use all the rivets. They work kind of like a wall molly. There is a small round pin that when inserted all the way, spreads out the fingers and grabs. The picture is an example of the rivets holding the grille on but our rivet pin doesn't have the head on it. you can push the pin all the way through the rivet. Some of them were really tight but eventually pushed through. I would not recommend drilling them. If the drill gets away from you, you could go completely through the rivet, grille etc. Good luck. I hope my description makes sense. The second pic is more like what we have.

I am impressed with your patience. I screwed with the first one for awhile then just drilled 'em all out and replaced them...LOL!!!

Once upon a time, long....long ago. I had a Datsun 260Z that held the interior panels in with the same type of push through rivet. Whenever I did any interior work and removed those panels I always spent most of my time hunting down the rivet centers that had fallen into the deepest depths of the chassis. So I've got some experience with the little buggers. They can be frustrating as hell. When I replaced the grille on the truck. I pushed one of the centers through and heard a snap where it took off and ricocheted around the room. It was like a scene out of Naked Gun. I found it. Ya just gotta think like one.:D I really am short on patience. I just don't want a stupid piece of plastic getting the better of me.
