After reading that recent thread on the Z06 putting on a mashmallow roasting demonstration, I figured I'd do a little looking into underhood Halon systems.

Here's the first link I found:
http://www.firefight1.com/products.html

Next:
http://www.stroudsafety.com/HalonSystems.html

From Summit:
http://store.summitracing.com/egnsearch.asp?N=400473+310743+115&autoview=sku

From Jegs:
http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10001_10002_96976_-1

I haven't tried any of them out yet (and with any good fortune, never will have to), but for less than $500 it seems like a wise investment for those pushing big HP, and almost a requirement for those running N20.

If anyone finds any other cool systems, please post up.

Just be careful with the Halon

It's very hazardous to humans

Actually CO2 is worse. Allot of the silicom valley computer companies used to use CO2 then switched to Halon because it was safer.

Good point.....

I can't remember which Halon system we used on the flight line, it was great for use on turbines and electrical equipment, but direct exposure to personnel was very bad (lack of O2).

We saw some stupid stuff out at the race track this last year. A couple of folks not only had Halon system set ups in the engine bay and for the fuel tank, but got a little stupid and had a setup inside the car. I know no one here is that stupid, but..... you never know

That stuff is definitely not good for Ya:nurse: :nurse: :nurse:

Christ....
I had hoped that I didn't need to say: "ENGINE BAY ONLY!" or "NOT FOR IN-CAB USE" or "DO NOT EAT".

Damn.
Too late.

I had a remote Halon system in my Z car because of the Methanol on board. Never had to use it, but it was nice knowing it was there.

Is methanol mixed with water still really flammable?

No. Water is the most effective way to put it out.

However by mixing water and methanol you lose a lot of the benefits of the methanol. By running pure methanol I could run up to 40 pounds of boost. When I mixed it with water I could on go to the low 20 range.

I wonder how well something like this might work on my sand car... the engine bay is open...

Wonder if they make a FM-200 version... which is approved by the EPA and safe for peeps... but also has the same fire stopping properties... as halon... I use it extensively in data centers that I build.

is this because of the octane boost effect from the methanol or cooling effect , or both working ?

Check out the MA2

In NHRA drag racing Cold Fire brand has replaced halon.

We had a big fire this year in Bakersfield and the Cold fire worked OK.

I personally still like Halon.
