On this day in 1775, the Continental Congress voted to fit out two sailing vessels, armed with ten carriage guns, as well as swivel guns, and manned by crews of eighty, and to send them out on a cruise of three months to intercept transports carrying munitions and stores to the British in America. Happy birthday, Navy!

The Coast Guard is one of the oldest organizations of the federal government and, until the Navy Department was established in 1798, we served as the nation's only armed force afloat. The early continental navy were just kids trying to be real fighting sailors. :D

1972-1973 Yorktown Naval Weapons Station in Virginia..As far as I remember no celebration was ever made.
