Considering your climate, it's probably just cold.

Also, the truck is new to you...and the 6-speed probably is too. It will take some practice before you get used to the 'throw' all the way over to Reverse. Took me a while too.

You could replace the transmission fluid. There's a DIY article here on the forum that explains, with pics, the complete procedure. It's pretty easy.

Cold weather shifting is a bitch, especially reverse. I changed my tranny fluid to Royal Purple Synthetic ATF, that helped, but that will probably void any factory transmission warranty.

Yes reverse and 1st needs a little more effort. Its like this on my new tranny and on the one the removed.

ok, i will try to change the fluid and see if that helps. I wont be driving it until it warms up anyways, but thanks for the advice and info

It's the cold. Try shifting into second and then shift back into reverse/1st (which ever you need).

How many miles do you have on the truck? Do you still have stock hydralics? I was having issues going into to 1st and reverse due to the stock slave going bad. You should have it checked out.

Once you get the truck warm, it should be much easier to shift.
Took mine for a little winter wake up yesterday, was about 35 degrees
and it (at first) felt like I was sifting in a sack of wet cement but after 10 mins was fine.

Cold weather is a bitch and is probably the problem here...................unless your slave is toasted. Mine melted at 3k miles. Slipping the clutch on hard launches will kill it everytime!!

Luke,

You have to do the Viper clutch hydraulics mod...... or your troubles will not go away.....

Contact one of the vendors on this site (XMetal or DC Performance, Mopar Connection or JMB) They'll get the right stuff to you..... Otherwise, this problem will just keep coming back.... The folks at Dodge have never owned up to the fact that this is thee weak link in the regular cab Viper truck....

These guys are right about the Viper master/slave upgrade, but I had 1 other issues with my tranny that you may not want to over look. Mine popped out of reverse after it was in and the problem was on the shift fork. There are plastic fork pads on the reverse fork. My fork pads had cracked and fell out of place causing to much play between the fork and shift collar. At first it will pop out every once in a while but as you use it more and more it will get worse. The cure is bronze fork pads from www.sixspeedsinc.com. I am ordering a whole tranny rebuild kit and a few upgrades on Wednesday when they open after the holidays.
