I've had my truck for a couple of weeks and really like it. In the past couple of days, however, it has been really tought to get started if its hot.

It turns over fine but seems to not be getting enough fuel/spark.

It's got 42000 on it and I'm not sure if the plugs have been replaced. If not the plugs, does anyone have any other ideas or similar experiences?

It starts fine when its cold btw.

One of the sensors could be getting hot.... (TPS, MAF, ETC).... But, if you have to ask about your spark plugs, I say REPLACE them! The stock plugs are crap anyways. Get NGK's for her. :)

Do you have a part number for the NGKs??

maybe ur using 87 octane?,only time my truck has ever had a hard time starting was when i used 87 (day before a hurricane only gas left!)

Um, no.

Man,

Anybody else? I only have a powertrain warranty so I don't want to start throwing parts at this thing.

After reading different articles on the net about hot starting, I'm starting to wonder if the pcm is bad.

Has anyone had trouble with the mopar pcm?

If its very hot your truck could be vapor locking. Or like they said you got a hold of some bad gas + the hot weather. Makes for not so good starting.

i would check the starter as well.....i had a similar problem

I'm assuming your speaking about driving the truck then shutting down then trying to restart? If it sits for 30 min or so does it fire up fine? In my experiences I'd start with the most likely and easy to determine problem area's.....the battery and its connectors.

Remove the connectors, clean with 1 part baking soda and 3 parts water mixture. A can of Coke in an emergency works fine too. Load test the battery and no not with a voltmeter which is pretty much worthless when testing a battery but a load tester. About $30 at your local Napa store or take your battery into any of the major chain auto parts stores and they will load test for free. If the battery test low/marginal place it on a charger then retest. If low/marginal you found your problem. If all tests fine re-install and duplicate heat soak to see if problem persists. If it does then I would perform voltage drop tests at battery connection (neg and Pos), starter as well ground circuit.

I can give more how to with voltage drop test when/if you reach that point.

Thanks for the input. In your scenario, would the starter be moving slowly? The reason that I ask is that the starter still spins at the same rate as when the engine is cold. Its not like the starter is barely moving. It almost acts like its flooded.

Does that sway your thinking at all?

And thanks again for all input.:D

Bringing this thread back

Hey guys, I want to bring this old thread back because today, the second day with my new 10, I noticed that once I got home from a 20 minute drive from a buddy's house that my truck acted funny. I got home and shut it off then went to turn it on to park better, and the truck started right up, ran for a few seconds, then shut off. I tried starting it back up, and it did the same thing. I even started it and gave it gas, and it would still shut off even at throttle.

After reading SRTAGGIE's issue, I went and tried to start it just now (been home for about 45 minutes) and it started right up and stayed on. Anyone else ever have their truck turn on for a few seconds then shut off? Then work fine later on? I'm thinking about calling the dealer and using the warranty to get this checked out.

Your powertrain warranty should cover just about anything wrong mechanically, check you plug wires also for cracks and dry rot, I changed mine at 20k they where stiffer then an old man on viagra.

My guess there is an electronic hiccup related to the centry key. If it started and ran for about 5 sec and shutdown, that is the same thing that will happen if you just made a copy of the centry key and then started the truck. Best thing I can think of there because it sounds the same. The centry key has a chip in it that tells the PCM the key matches and it is ok to keep running.

Sounds like you have a key issue, when you disconnected the battery you reset the pcm, thats probaly why it stayed running. Did you notice when it shut off was there a red circle light on in the dash?

I'm leaning towards the key also. I checked my wires and they feel just fine.

I did notice a small red light turn on for a bit on my dash, next to the temp gauge. Do you think this would be covered under warranty if it's bumper to bumper? Thanks for all the help guys. I swear I love this site more and more each day. :D

sounds like a flakey skim module or key......... dod you have another key to try ?:dontknow:

I do have a spare key, but at the time I didn't think it was a key issue so I didn't try it. I'll start carrying both keys in case it does it again.
